Overview & Responsibilities

The Big Picture

We're looking for a skilled machinist who can do it all—layout, machining, sub-assembly, and dimensional checking. You'll be the one who takes a drawing or sketch and turns it into a precision part or sub-assembly. If you take pride in accuracy and like working with a variety of equipment, this role offers plenty of variety and challenge.

Equipment You'll Use

You'll work with a broad range of machines and tools, including:

  • Layout machines

  • Vertical boring mills (manual and CNC controlled)

  • Horizontal boring mills

  • Planer milling machines

  • Radial and angular drill presses

  • Measuring devices, hand tools, fixtures, and deburring tools

  • Pedestal tool grinders and tap disintegrator

  • Jib hoist, overhead crane, forklift trucks

  • Personal computer

What You'll Do Day-to-Day

Layout & Setup

  • Work from and interpret prints, drawings, and work orders

  • Make sketches as needed; obtain drawings, tools, and fixtures from the tool crib

  • Pull necessary material from stock

  • Lay out castings, forgings, plate fabrications, and machined parts

  • Mark angles, radii, tapers, bolt circles, etc., and center punch as needed

  • Paint guidelines, dimension figures, and instructions on material for downstream operations

  • Stencil or stamp parts for identification

  • Go into other areas for layout work when required

Machining

  • Set up machines by installing and adjusting tools, clamps, and fixtures

  • Position and align parts; set proper feeds and speeds

  • Insert tape or operate manually; press buttons to initiate tape control cycles

  • Perform required machining operations

  • Monitor spindle speed

  • Verify micrometer accuracy

  • Check parts with measuring devices to ensure operations are complete

Finishing & Assembly

  • Assemble and disassemble as required

  • Deburr all machined areas (including simultaneously with machine operations)

  • Submit parts for inspection as required

  • Use grinding attachments; grind tools from blanks

  • Adjust, change, and dress tools

  • Operate a tap disintegrator as needed

Material Handling & Safety

  • Use hoist, crane, and forklift truck to obtain and move materials

  • Perform crane hooking and unhooking

  • Work from ladders and scaffolds when needed

  • Lubricate machines; wipe and oil machine ways

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance

  • Keep tools, material, equipment, and work area organized

  • Report defective material or equipment to supervision

  • Follow all safety rules

  • Report production count, time, and identifying data as required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Must be able and willing to work 1st (7am–3pm), 2nd (3pm–11pm), and 3rd (11pm–7am) shifts. Shifts are not guaranteed and are subject to realignment.

  • Must be able and willing to work overtime, weekends, and holidays.
