Schedule: Night Shift. 36 Hours Weekly. 6:00pm-6:00am.
About the Position
The FBC Scrub Tech plays a critical role in supporting the surgical team during obstetric procedures, including cesarean sections and other related surgeries. This position involves preparing and maintaining a sterile environment, assisting surgeons and nurses with the setup of surgical instruments, and ensuring that all necessary equipment and supplies are available and sterile before and during procedures. The role requires attention to detail, knowledge of obstetric surgical procedures, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and high-stress environment. This position also involves maintaining strict infection control protocols, patient safety standards, and assisting with the turnover of operating rooms between procedures.
Overview of Responsibilities
- Instrumental in achieving targeted benchmarks for on-time starts and room turnovers.
- Pre-op duties include but are not limited to:
- Performs shave preps as necessary.
- Performs skin bath in preoperative holding area.
- Performs antibacterial skin preparation.
- Assists in selecting supplies and equipment for procedure.
- Assists with completion of patient charges.
- Assists in preparation of OR suite and OR table.
- Checks supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
- Opens sterile packages using sterile technique.
- Assists as needed with intravenous fluid setups, anesthesia equipment, monitors, and supplies for procedures.
- Intra-op duties:
- Assists in placing and positioning the patient on the OR table.
- Holds extremities during the operative skin preparation if necessary, using aseptic or sterile technique as indicated.
- Performs the operative skin scrub preparation.
- Assists with urinary catheterization of patients during surgical procedure upon order of physician.
- Prepares and operates the electro surgery units, laparoscopic equipment/instrumentation if needed, and other equipment/instrumentation used during the operative case.
- Assists the surgeon with application of wound dressings.
- Performs scrub activities utilizing accepted aseptic principles and following established hospital and surgical services department policies and procedures.
- Follows strict sterile technique when establishing the sterile field and maintains its sterility throughout the procedure.
- Performs accurate needle, sponge, sharp, small supplies, and instruments counts according to accepted policy/procedure.
- Holds, manipulates, and retracts tissue with instruments to assist the surgeon during the procedure, including cutting of suture, anticipating the needs of the surgeon specific to the procedure.
- Assists other team members, upon completion of the procedure, to transfer the patient onto the surgical cart or bed for transportation to PACU or the specialized nursing units.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for processing and transports them to the decontamination area.
- Assists with post-procedure cleaning of the operative and preparation of the room for subsequent patients.
- Responsible for stocking supplies in operative suite, labor rooms, treatment room, and postpartum rooms.
- Additional responsibilities as delegated by RN, including patient vital signs, ADLs, etc.

Education & Experience
- Minimum education required: Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology training program or equivalent experience.
- Minimum education preferred: Certified Surgical Tech (CST)
- Minimum experience preferred: 2 years of experience as a Surgical Tech in OB
Licensure & Certification
- Minimum certification required: BLS
- Minimum certification preferred: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
