Job description

Position Overview

The MRI Technologist independently operates Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment to perform complex MRI exams while following MRI safety practices, VALBHS policies, and medical staff protocols. This role includes preparing and positioning patients, selecting imaging parameters, administering contrast under radiologist supervision, managing images, documenting patient information, and supporting radiology services for eligible Veteran beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently operate MRI equipment to perform complex MRI exams and follow MRI safety standards.
  • Receive patients, explain procedures, position patients, set technical parameters, and adjust accessory imaging equipment.
  • Operate superconductive MRI equipment using strong magnetic fields and radio waves to image the brain, neck, spine, chest, body, and extremities.
  • Meet or exceed recognized national quality assurance standards for MRI services.
  • Set up MRI suites with sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, and required equipment.
  • Prepare and administer contrast material intravenously under close radiologist supervision, as required.
  • Send images to PACS, archive and post-process images, and complete case editing of requests and reports.
  • Enter and maintain patient information in Radiology VistA, CPRS, and related systems.
  • Contribute to patient assessments, prioritize care needs, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Follow VALBHS policies, medical staff protocols, VA privacy, cyber security, safety, and training requirements.
  • Protect VA records and patient information, using only the minimum necessary information for the correct patient and service.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement and Risk Management activities as required.
  • Report unusual incidents, accidents, malfunctions, injuries, or deaths according to VALBHS and contract requirements.
  • Maintain patient dignity, rights, safety, and professional standards at all times.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum six months of experience with MRI equipment similar to VALBHS scanners, specifically 1.5 Tesla or 3.0 Tesla General Electric MRI scanners; or minimum one year of current MRI modality experience without GE MRI scanner experience.
  • Current valid American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Radiography certification.
  • Current valid ARRT advanced certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
  • Graduate of a qualifying radiography or radiation therapy technology program from an accredited college, university hospital, medical school, post-secondary technical school, or vocational school.
  • Demonstrated experience starting IV lines and performing contrast injections.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • PACS work experience required, including AGFA PACS experience.
  • Ability to use Radiology VistA, CPRS, imaging technology, and required patient care systems.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Card holder required.
  • Must pass or possess VA Public Trust Clearance.
  • Must follow VA orientation, privacy, cyber security, fire safety, infection control, onboarding, and compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intravenous certification preferred but not required.
  • Prior VA, federal healthcare, hospital radiology, or MRI department experience helpful.
