Job description

Position Overview

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist / PET-CT Technologist independently operates Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT scanner equipment to perform complex diagnostic imaging examinations. This role supports the VALBHS Radiology Department by preparing patients, using calibrated radiotracers and radiopharmaceuticals, performing imaging and post-processing duties, documenting studies, and following strict Nuclear Medicine safety and quality assurance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently perform complex Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT imaging examinations.
  • Operate computerized Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT camera imaging systems, and related specialized equipment.
  • Receive patients, explain procedures, position patients, set technical parameters, and adjust accessory imaging equipment.
  • Perform diagnostic exams using calibrated radiotracers and radiopharmaceuticals, including PET, PET/CT, general studies, cardiac studies, static, dynamic, and SPECT imaging.
  • Set up Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT suites with sterile supplies, radiopharmaceuticals, radiotracers, catheters, and required equipment.
  • Prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals, radiotracers, and contrast material intravenously under radiologist supervision, as required by contract.
  • Start IV access and perform radiopharmaceutical and contrast injections based on demonstrated experience and contract requirements.
  • Send images to PACS, archive and post-process images, and complete case editing of requests and reports.
  • Enter and maintain patient information in Radiology Vista, CPRS, and related systems.
  • Contribute to patient assessments, prioritize care needs, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Follow VALBHS policies, medical staff protocols, Nuclear Medicine safety practices, and national quality assurance standards.
  • Protect VA records and patient information, using only the minimum necessary information for the correct patient and service.
  • Complete mandatory VA and organizational training, including privacy, cyber security, fire safety, infection control, quality improvement, and compliance education.
  • Report unusual incidents, accidents, malfunctions, injuries, or deaths according to VALBHS and contract requirements.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement and Risk Management activities as required.
  • Maintain patient dignity, rights, safety, and professional standards at all times.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of current work experience in Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT.
  • Current and valid ARRT Nuclear Medicine certification [ARRT(N)] and/or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist certification.
  • Graduate of a qualifying radiography or radiation therapy technology educational program from an accredited college, university hospital, medical school, post-secondary technical school, or vocational school.
  • Demonstrated experience starting IV access and performing radiopharmaceutical and contrast injections.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • PACS work experience, including AGFA PACS.
  • Ability to use Radiology Vista, CPRS, imaging technology, and required patient care systems.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Card holder required.
  • Must pass or possess VA Public Trust Clearance.
  • Must follow VA privacy, cyber security, safety, training, onboarding, and compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intravenous certification preferred but not required.
  • Prior VA, federal healthcare, hospital radiology, Nuclear Medicine, or PET/CT department experience helpful.
