Job Summary:

Works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team providing healthcare in inpatient and/or outpatient health care settings. Didactic education, clinical competency and national certification in identified area of clinical practice. Manages women's health care, focusing particularly on pregnancy, childbirth, the post-partum period, care of the newborn, and the family planning and gynecologic needs of women. Practice within the health care system and perform consultation, collaborative management, or referral, as indicated by the health status of the patient. Considers the interpersonal, inter-relationship of gender, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation, economic status and socio-political power differentials. With advanced knowledge of nursing theory and its application, the CNM demonstrates medical knowledge, clinical judgment, technical competence, professionalism, interpersonal communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsibility for life-long professional development and competency validation. Practice in accord with the Standards for the Practice of Midwifery, as defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Vanderbilt Birth Center is a licensed, CABC-accredited freestanding birth center owned by Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  We’re in the unique position of being fully integrated within an academic medical center yet have the freedom to truly support physiologic birth in a beautiful, peaceful space. The birth center has been open for 10 years and we have supported over 2900 births!

We’re currently seeking a certified nurse-midwife for a 0.75 FTE position at our birth center.  We provide care to low-risk clients and their newborns, with an emphasis on personalized, family-centered care planning and intensive education.  Midwives are responsible for prenatal, intrapartum, initial newborn, and postpartum care, as well as routine gynecological care and family planning.  Our model is evidence-based, and our carefully tracked outcomes reflect a high level of care.  Most major forms of insurance (including Medicaid) are accepted at the birth center.  We are committed to addressing healthcare inequities and passionate about increasing access to community birth.

Midwives at the birth center are employed by Vanderbilt University Medical Center and receive clinical faculty appointment through Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.  We regularly precept students from Vanderbilt's midwifery program and are committed to seeing midwifery grow!  We also have an extraordinary group of registered nurses, childbirth educators, and administrative staff who help us provide the best care to our clients. 

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited midwifery program and current certification from AMCB

  • Current licensure as a CNM in TN (or eligibility for licensure)

  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program and BLS certifications

  • Adherence to birth center policies and procedures

  • Participation in ongoing quality improvement initiatives at the center and professional development activities

  • Ability to work a rotating schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays

  • Ability to be within 30 minutes of the birth center when on call (if not at the center)

  • Commitment to working with a diverse group of clients and coworkers, with an emphasis on reducing healthcare disparities

Preferred:

  • 2-3+ years of full-scope experience as a CNM 

  • Prior community birth experience (birth center or homebirth)

  • Prior waterbirth experience

  • EHR experience (especially Epic)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment and plan of care.

  • In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.

  • Orders, performs, interprets and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.

  • Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.

  • Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical, needed to achieve expected outcomes.

  • Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care; Initiates appropriate referrals and consultations; Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice; Facilitates the patient’s transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
