Our open, inclusive environment ensures people are valued, supported and able to thrive. By joining KBR, you become part of a team that works together, shares common values and is united in delivering great outcomes.

The Opportunity

KBR is seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Infrastructure Solutions team, based in Sydney (with projects across NSW and nationally).

You will provide technical leadership across investigations, analysis, design and design assurance for geotechnical scopes on infrastructure projects (e.g., rail, roads, utilities and civil structures). You will be accountable for geotechnical inputs through to issued deliverables, including independent checking/verification where required, and for integrating geotechnical outcomes with civil and structural design.

With a confident and collaborative approach, you will liaise with clients, contractors and other disciplines, and coordinate with project teams across NSW and Australia to deliver safe, compliant and high-quality outcomes within agreed scope, programme and budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and specialist advice on geotechnical design and analysis for infrastructure projects, including rail, roads, utilities, retaining structures and earthworks.
  • Manage and oversee geotechnical scopes from proposal through delivery, including design assurance/verification, internal reviews and coordination of inputs so deliverables meet client, statutory and project requirements.
  • Undertake and/or review geotechnical design and analysis, including foundations, retaining structures and temporary works interface, earthworks, excavation support, slope stability, settlement, soil–structure interaction and ground improvement.
  • Plan, scope and supervise geotechnical investigations (field and laboratory), review factual reporting, and manage subconsultants to ensure data quality, appropriate risk management and fit-for-purpose recommendations.
  • Provide construction-phase geotechnical support, including responses to RFIs, site observations, hold points, and development/review of instrumentation and monitoring plans where required.
  • Coach and mentor engineers and graduates, providing technical direction, review feedback and supporting capability development across the team.
  • Collaborate with civil, structural and project management teams to manage interfaces, agree design assumptions and ensure geotechnical risks are identified, communicated and managed through the design process.
  • Contribute to technical governance and continuous improvement (tools, templates, lessons learned), stay current with Australian Standards and NSW client requirements, and share knowledge across the team.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) with post-graduate qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Established, relevant professional experience in consulting and/or delivery environments.
  • Engineers Australia Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and/or National Engineering Register (NER) registration is ideal but not essential.
  • Strong technical capability in geotechnical interpretation and design, including investigations, foundations, retaining structures/excavations, earthworks, slope stability, settlement/ground movements and soil–structure interaction.
  • Strong experience with typical geotechnical analysis software tools such as GeoStudio suite (e.g., SLOPE/W, SEEP/W), PLAXIS 2D/3D, WALLAP and LPILE (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and priorities, including scope definition, resourcing, design reviews and delivering to programme and budget.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to author/review clear geotechnical reports and communicate risks, assumptions and recommendations to clients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organisational skills with a focus on quality assurance, document control and timely delivery.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring capability, including technical coaching and review of others’ work.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, professional ethics and continuous improvement in a client-focused consulting environment.
