Project Description:
Electrical Area Engineering Intern
Work with the Engineering staff to support the Electric Area Engineering team. Work as an entry level engineer doing tasks that support electric reliability, power quality, system protection and plant betterment to improve the electric distribution system. Through practical operations experience and mentoring, a successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence and people skills.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Assist with distribution system analysis and feeder performance evaluations
- Review outage data and reliability metrics (e.g., SAIDI, SAIFI, CAIDI) to identify trends
- Prepare and support Project Planning & Execution submittals
- Participate in field visits to observe construction activities and system conditions
- Apply and verify compliance with electric standards, construction practices, and engineering guidelines
- Analyze power quality measurements, including voltage, current, flicker, and harmonics
- Assist Area Engineers with capital project tracking and documentation
- Work closely with Area Engineers, project managers, planners, designers, and operations personnel
- Communicate & prepare technical summaries, reports, and presentations for engineering staff
This position is for a June 1st, 2026 start date. These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements
Current student, Sophomore or Junior status only (as of Fall 2026).
Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering.
Able to commute to the Distribution Center location in Denver, CO- Hybrid Schedule
Able to work part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).
Must be local to Colorado and attend school in Colorado.
Preferred Qualifications
3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
Knowledge of Electrical Power Distribution/Systems
