Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as onsite. The successful candidate is expected to report to their assigned GM worksite, five days per week and to respond to the site in the event of an emergency after hours, on weekend or holidays.
The Role:
The Dimensional Engineer – Body Shop is responsible for ensuring Body-in-White dimensional integrity and fit/finish quality for cab and box assemblies. This role leads root-cause analysis and corrective actions for dimensional issues, partners with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Maintenance, and supports launch and continuous improvement initiatives for current and future programs. This position will work on a rotating basis.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
- Provides technical support to the production organization
- Communicates between shifts and departments to implement best practices, resolve problems, and sustain consistent performance to objectives
- Coordinates with Manufacturing Engineering and Execution on new model process and equipment planning
- Implements engineering and product changes
- Identifies and implements opportunities for improvement to support BPD in the areas of SPQRCE
- Ensures compliance with ISO 90002, ISO 14001
- Implement model change process requirements
- Promotes use of GM-GMS Strategies
- Design and build special application tools for Production
- Provides input to Manufacturing Engineering relative to KPC (Key Product Characteristics) selection and Process Control Plan development
- Write detailed Task Information Sheets pertaining to specific complex operations
- Monitor compliance to Process Control Plans
- Supports daily operations to achieve required unit SPQRC results: identifies and implements opportunities for improvement to Support unit BPD
- Organizes and coordinates problem solving activities related to quality problems
- Facilitates documentation and reporting of quality feedback measures (verification stations, direct run, audit, etc.) and problems for the Shift Leader and Area Manager
- Promotes safe work practices as the highest priority and implements objectives for ergonomics, health/safety and housekeeping
- Mentor Maintenance Teams at team meetings
- Builds and maintains good working relationships with employees, union, management and supplier community
- Understands and consistently administers National and Local Agreements
- Coordinates the implementation of unit related quality initiatives
- Drives variation reductions utilizing Statistical Process Control methodology
- Ensures full compliance with dimensional specifications and standards
- Assures that appropriate statistical tools and processes are applied to Special Cause, Common Cause and Hardy Perennial-type problems as the owner of Diamond 5A of the 7 Diamond Problem Solving Process
- Assists production in the development of reaction plans
- Monitors execution of Process Control Plans in the plant (e.g. conducts QCOS performance checks)
- Attend or lead various continuous improvement workshops (Enhanced PMP, CIP, 5S, Gofast!, Value Stream Mapping, etc)
- Manages process requirements by utilizing Competitive Manufacturing Processes with emphasis on identification and elimination of waste
- Support Department Throughput Improvement Process (TIP)
- Review top scrap items and problem solve with appropriate team
- Works with supplier community, engineering and production organization to identify and execute cost reduction ideas
- Able to work off shifts, over time, weekends, and supervise and provide direction to skilled trades
- Work with supplier quality and suppliers to improve the quality of the incoming material as well as address build issues impacting the plant performance to DRR and GCA
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or equivalent experience such that is acquired through employment as a manufacturing engineer or skilled trades journeyman status
- 2+ years of experience in a Manufacturing Environment
- Vision Systems experience
- Solid understanding of GD&T principles and vehicle body build processes.
- Familiarity with CAD software and ability to interpret dimensional data.
- Working knowledge of A, B, C metrics and variation analysis tools.
- Must be able to work different shifts on a rotational basis
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Prior Dimensional Engineering Experience
- Experience in a lean GMS environment.
- Experience in Maintenance and/or Engineering in a vehicle assembly manufacturing environment.
