At ALS, we encourage you to dream big.

When you join us, you’ll be part of a global team harnessing the power of scientific testing and data-driven insights to build a healthier future.

About the Role

We’re seeking a skilled and motivated Laboratory Technician (Microbiology) to join our Food & Pharmaceutical team. This is a fantastic opportunity to work across a broad range of microbiological disciplines — including Food, Pharmaceutical, and Water — within a dynamic, quality-driven environment.

In this role, you will be responsible for the accurate and timely performance of microbiological testing and sample preparation in accordance with ALS Quality Work Instructions, TGA, and NATA requirements. You'll play a key role in maintaining the high standards our clients rely on, while contributing to a safe and efficient laboratory environment.

This is a critical position for ensuring food safety, product quality, and the integrity of our microbiological testing processes.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure all analytical procedures and assigned tasks are performed in accordance with ALS Quality Work Instructions, including all QA/QC requirements.

  • Perform sample preparation and microbiological testing across Food, Pharmaceutical, and Water microbiology disciplines.

  • Conduct microbiological confirmation testing

  • Perform and Read Pharmaceutical Validations.

  • Investigate and resolve non-conformances, deviations, out-of-specification (OOS) results, and test failures in a timely manner.

  • Organise and prioritise designated tasks to maximise daily laboratory efficiency and workflow.

  • Ensure all testing and analytical activities are completed within established turnaround times and in accordance with relevant analytical standards and procedures.

  • Managing and maintaining cultures in accordance with laboratory standards

  • Identify and escalate anomalies in results, sample types, or sample behaviour to the Team Leader or Laboratory Manager.

  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and perform housekeeping duties in line with laboratory standards and safety requirements.

  • Perform calculations and data verification associated with analytical testing and sample preparation.

  • NATA Signatory

About you

You are a detail-oriented team player with solid microbiology knowledge and a genuine commitment to quality. You thrive in a structured environment and take pride in delivering accurate, compliant results.

You will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary degree in Microbiology, Science, or a related discipline

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a microbiological laboratory setting

  • Sound knowledge of Food, Pharmaceutical, and/or Water microbiology

  • Familiarity with TGA and/or NATA requirements (highly regarded)

  • Strong numerical and data verification skills

  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing tasks

  • A proactive, quality-focused mindset with exceptional attention to detail

  • An understanding of laboratory safety practices and procedures
