Description:

SENIOR GENETIC COUNSELOR

GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE: 

The Senior Genetic Counselor, in collaboration with the Medical Director and Program administrators, will oversee Cancer Genetics Program. The Senior Counselor will work closely with System physicians on departmental processes, including program development, policies and procedures, and participation in research protocols. In addition to providing high-level independent genetic counseling. Clinically assess and counsel individuals and families regarding genetics and risk management. Provides education to patients and families as well as to physicians and the community.  

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) required 

  • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or ABMG Board Certified 

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in patient/family counseling, risk assessment, testing protocols and program development.  

  • State of Idaho provisional/regular license required  

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions 

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Adolescent, Adult, Geriatrics) 

  • Ensure the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients. 

  • Works in collaboration with individual Programs and with referring physicians to ensure provision of appropriate care. 

  • Obtains and evaluates the family histories of the patient and patient’s family members to provide genetic evaluation. 

  • Discusses with the patient and the family the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management of risk for pre-disposition syndromes or genetic conditions. 

  • Identifies, coordinates, and obtains informed consent for genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for genetic assessment. 

  • Integrates the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests with individual and family medical histories. 

  • Explains to a patient and the patient’s family the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests. 

  • Provides risk analysis and calculation. 

  • Discusses informed consent, privacy issues, and confidentiality and discrimination concerns with patients. 

  • Provides post-test counseling and support, including review of medical management options. 

  • Provides accurate, appropriate and timely reports for patient records and to referring physicians. 

  • Identifies and uses community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, psychosocial support and advocacy. 

  • Provides genetics education to other health care professionals. 

  • Attends applicable meetings and conferences. 

  • Manage training and onboarding of new genetic counselors.   

  • Works collaboratively, when necessary, with other Genetic Counselors in the system   

  • Represents the Genetic Counseling on the Cancer Committee, ensures the department complies with the standards of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.  

  • Educates other professionals regarding familial risk, including, but not limited to, physicians, nurses, and other health care providers.
