Job description
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining KIPP Tulsa facilities in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition to ensure an optimal learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role plays a critical part in supporting school operations, safety, and culture through daily cleaning, maintenance support, and event readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Facility Cleaning & Sanitation
Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, and common areas daily
Sweep, mop, vacuum, wax, and maintain floors (carpet, tile, concrete)
Empty trash and recycling; replace liners and dispose of waste properly
Clean windows, glass, drinking fountains, and surfaces
Restock supplies (soap, paper towels, tissue) and maintain inventory
Safety & Building Operations
Maintain a safe environment by identifying and reporting hazards, damage, or needed repairs
Lock/unlock doors and ensure building security during assigned shifts
Follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals and equipment
Support compliance with district policies, OSHA standards, and safety regulations
Monitor building systems (lights, HVAC awareness) and report issues
Maintenance & Operational Support
Perform minor maintenance tasks (light repairs, bulb replacement, touch-up painting, basic upkeep, etc.)
Assist with setup and breakdown for school events, athletics, and meetings
Support seasonal tasks such as:
Summer deep cleaning (floors, painting, furniture moving)
Winter weather response (snow/ice removal)
Assist with grounds upkeep (trash pickup, light landscaping)
Team & Culture Contribution
Build positive relationships with staff and students
Contribute to a culture of respect, safety, and pride in the school environment
Communicate effectively with the school leadership and operations team
Support campus-wide initiatives and special projects
Required
High school diploma or GED (preferred but not required)
Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical labor
Reliable attendance and punctuality
Preferred
Prior custodial, facilities, or maintenance experience
Knowledge of cleaning equipment, chemicals, and safety procedures
Experience working in schools or youth-centered environments
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong attention to detail and cleanliness
Ability to follow schedules and complete tasks independently
Basic knowledge of maintenance and repair practices
Strong work ethic and commitment to excellence
Flexibility to respond to urgent cleaning or safety needs
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Exposure to cleaning chemicals and equipment
Ability to work evening or early morning shifts as needed

Compensation and Benefits:
This is a Full-Time, 12-month leadership position.
