Job description

The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country with a mission of combating municipal corruption. It serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds.

DOI is seeking an Associate Investigator to conduct confidential investigations concerning fraud and corruption, and inquiries about the affairs, operations, methods, programs, accounts, personnel, and efficiency of City agencies, including the Departments of Citywide Administrative Services, Health, and Finance, as well as City employees, vendors, and recipients of City funds.

This position is ideally suited for a candidate who is interested in law enforcement, with prior investigative experience, and who is inquisitive, resourceful, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to perform effectively both independently and as part of a team. Investigators will be enrolled in an Investigative Officer Training Academy, which they will need to successfully complete. This training may lead to certification as a New York State Peace Officer. Current NYS certified Peace Officers are encouraged to apply.

The Investigative Officer Training Academy (IOTA) is a 10-week program that follows the NYS Basic Peace Officer training requirements. Topics include Defensive Tactics, Crisis Intervention, foot and vehicle surveillance, interviewing, report writing, NYS and NYC laws, rules, and regulations, testifying and public speaking. Candidates will be required to participate in practical scenarios, partake in moderately strenuous physical activities and successfully pass weekly examinations.

Candidates who graduate from the IOTA program and wish to become a certified NYS Peace Officer will be required to complete additional training and background checks. This includes the successful completion of the DOI Physical Ability Test, which includes, but is not limited to, running, push-ups, sit-ups, and lifting/dragging up to 165lbs, tactics training and a 40-hour basic firearms training course.

If selected, the candidate will be fingerprinted and undergo a background investigation. Due to the position consisting of law enforcement and/or investigative functions, the candidate's consumer credit history will be reviewed during the background investigation as permitted by NYC Administrative Code 8-107(24)(b)(2)(A).

A valid NYS Driver’s License is required.
