Job description
Traveling Assistant Camp Directors are adaptable, people-first leaders who support multiple camp sites across a region, stepping in when Assistant Camp Directors or instructors are out. Support when sites are short-staffed, or when extra operational support is needed. Reporting to the Field Program Manager and partnering closely with on-site Camp Directors, you’ll help ensure smooth daily operations, strong team culture, and a joyful, safe, and inclusive camp experience for campers and staff alike.
Core Responsibilities
Extended Care Program Management (After Camp Program)
- Independently direct, plan activities, train, and supervise the Extended Care program (3:00–6:00 PM) at assigned sites, serving as the leader of after-camp programming while traveling between locations.
- Create a safe, fun, and engaging environment by balancing camper safety, operational needs, and staff support across varying site contexts.
- Maintain staffing ratios, releasing camp counselors and interns as needed.
- At sites with multiple Assistant Camp Directors, flex into the Extended Care Lead role or provide coverage and support as needed, with all ACDs able to manage this program when required.
Daily Camp Operations
- Collaborate with Camp Directors across assigned sites to ensure a safe and joyful program, completing daily operational tasks and acting as "manager on duty" in the absence of on-site leadership.
- Flexibly assist with managing camp rotations, covering staffing gaps, and stepping in to lead camper groups or facilitate curriculum as needed across multiple locations.
- Lead by example by actively participating in camp activities, chants, songs, and skits to promote a vibrant camp spirit and exemplary customer service.
- Partner with Camp Directors to support, coach, and motivate camp teams, with a particular emphasis on mentoring and managing Summer Interns.
- Supervise and assign daily tasks to staff, coordinate coverage during staff breaks, and oversee responsibilities during Extended Care while providing consistent leadership during travel assignments.
Administrative Support
- Effectively use camp systems, such as Salesforce and Camp Planner, to support essential administrative tasks related to family registration, attendance, and communication across sites.
- Ensure continuity and accuracy of administrative processes when covering multiple camps or stepping into temporary leadership roles.
- Use creative problem-solving and strong prioritization skills to balance daily tasks while maintaining camper safety and program quality
Build Your Skills with Ongoing Training and Support
- Continue leadership development through ongoing coaching, mentorship, and training from camp leaders, building a foundation for future leadership opportunities at Galileo and beyond.
- Paid online training focused on building your leadership and operations management skillset. This training is flexibly self-paced with the potential for additional virtual learning sessions.
- In-person training and setup days: one prep day for camp leadership and two camp setup days for all staff, to ensure you are confident and ready for an incredible summer!
Work Location & Schedule
Temporary, seasonal role requiring consistent availability Monday–Friday during the summer camp season.
Shifts may occur between 7:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. local time; schedules may vary week to week based on coverage needs.
The role supports all nine Colorado camp locations, with an assigned home base site. Travel between sites will be required.
Full-Time Time position: 40 hours per week once the season begins
Employment start and end dates vary by camp location and business needs.
PAY & PERKS
- Your exact pay will be determined based on a variety of factors, including work-site location and tenure:
- Pay rate is $25.00 per hour
- Mileage reimbursement for 40+ miles from homebase site
- All staff receive a training pay rate for hours worked prior to the start of camp, which includes all online training and set up day; the training pay rate is the local minimum wage rate.
- One free week of camp for your own child!
- 15% Friends and Family Discount
- Priority scholarship nominations
- Membership in the Galileo Alumni Community of over 20,000 inspiring changemakers!
- 2+ years of experience in K-8 education, child development, or related work/education
- 6+ months of leadership or supervisory experience preferred
- Experience mentoring, coaching, or supervising children in groups of 15+
- Availability for full-time camp work (4–8 consecutive weeks, depending on location)
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with enthusiasm and urgency
- Willingness to complete pre-camp requirements (background checks, onboarding, training, CPR/First Aid)
- Must be 18 years of age by May 1, 2026
