Description

Northrop Grumman Australia (NGA) is offering an exciting Systems Engineering (Certification) Internship within our Triton Program, as part of the 2026–2027 Summer Intern Program.

In this role, you’ll work within our Certification Team, gaining exposure to a broad range of specialist engineering disciplines that underpin airworthiness, safety, and operational compliance. This is a unique opportunity to see how systems engineering and certification activities come together to support a complex Defence aviation capability.

You’ll be supported by experienced engineers and will contribute to real engineering outputs that directly support fleet operations and serviceability.

What you’ll be doing

As a Systems Engineer (Certification) Intern, you will:

  • Support the development of certification artefacts, such as design classifications, specifications, engineering and technical reports

  • Assist with test plans, test reports, and engineering documentation under supervision from senior engineers

  • Contribute to incorporating engineering changes into the system, including reviewing and consuming international technical and design data

  • Support the capture and management of system and functional requirements within a requirements management tool

  • Help develop work instructions and templates to ensure compliance with certification responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Work alongside engineers across systems, safety, structural integrity, test and evaluation, and certification disciplines

This 12 week internship is designed to help you learn, grow, and gain confidence in a real Defence engineering environment.  This role is based at our Edinburgh base in Adelaide, South Australia.

Eligibility requirements:

We’re looking for motivated students with an interest in systems engineering, certification, and Defence aviation. Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • Current study in Aerospace, Systems, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software, or Avionics Engineering

  • 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year standing at university

  • A basic understanding of systems engineering principles, including system architecture and interfaces

  • An interest in requirements management and the engineering lifecycle (requirements, design, compliance, verification & validation)

  • Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn in a regulated engineering environment

  • Ability to work full-time over the allocated internship period

If you’re ready to apply your engineering studies in a real Defence environment and learn from some of the best in the industry, we’d love to hear from you.  You can submit your application, along with your Resume, Cover Letter and Academic Transcripts on our website. Due to our secure systems, we are unable to accept resumes and other documentation via email.

The Recruitment Process

  • Apply on our website with the required documents. A cover letter is crucial as we want to know, “why us?”

  • You will receive an email with a survey and some more information about Northrop Grumman, which we hope you complete as soon as possible.

  • You will receive a call or email from one of our friendly recruitment team to talk through your application. From here, our recruitment team will organise for you to attend one of our assessment centres or an interview.

  • A recruitment representative or your hiring manager will give you a call to let you know if you are successful or unsuccessful.

  • If you are successful, a People and Culture representative will then reach out to you to discuss your onboarding and provide a warm welcome to Northrop Grumman!

Please note that our recruitment process can be lengthy due to the strong security checks required which allow our Interns to get close to our secure technology. Therefore, any candidates MUST have an Australian Citizenship to apply.
