About the role The Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering is responsible for leading and managing the mechanical engineering function in support of the organization’s business and product strategies. This role provides technical, people, and strategic leadership across mechanical design, development, and product support activities while ensuring alignment with quality, cost, manufacturability, and time‑to‑market objectives. This position manages multiple mechanical engineering teams or complex product portfolios and plays a key role in cross‑functional collaboration, talent development, and continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and operations. Responsibilities Leadership & Strategy Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical engineering managers, supervisors, and/or senior engineers. Establish and execute mechanical engineering strategies aligned with business unit and corporate objectives. Translate product and operational requirements into engineering plans, priorities, and resource strategies. Serve as a senior engineering leader on cross‑functional programs, including product development, Technology Research, manufacturing transitions, and cost‑reduction initiatives. Technical Oversight Provide technical leadership and governance over mechanical design, analysis, validation, and documentation. Ensure designs meet requirements for performance, safety, quality, reliability, compliance, and manufacturability. Review and approve engineering approaches, design standards, specifications, and major technical decisions. Drive design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and lifecycle cost optimization. Product Development & Execution Oversee mechanical engineering deliverables across the full product lifecycle—from concept and development through production and sustaining. Ensure engineering schedules, budgets, and milestones are met. Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Program Management to support successful product launches and production readiness. Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for complex product or manufacturing issues. Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, industry standards, patents, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals Plans and leads Research Technology Management projects including scope of project, definitions of system and product, strategies and tactics, risk evaluation, schedule, resource requirements, budget and return People & Performance Management Set clear performance expectations, conduct performance reviews, and manage succession planning for mechanical engineering talent. Identify skill gaps and drive technical and leadership development plans. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Process & Continuous Improvement Establish, improve, and standardize mechanical engineering processes, tools, and best practices. Support compliance with internal procedures and external standards (e.g., ISO, regulatory requirements). Lead or sponsor continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, quality, cost, and cycle time reduction. Financial & Resource Management Develop and manage departmental budgets related to staffing, tools, and engineering resources. Support make/buy decisions, capital justification, and resource prioritization. Partner with leadership to align engineering capacity with short‑ and long‑term business needs. Qualifications Technical Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and applied design experience Proven people leadership and talent development capability Strategic thinking with the ability to translate strategy into execution Strong project and program management skills Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills Ability to influence across functions and levels of the organization Data‑driven decision making and structured problem‑solving skills Must have the ability to use Microsoft 365 tools, including Copilot AI Behavioral Leadership – Ability to lead, manage, motivate, and mentor team to drive towards success and foster a culture of excellence Communication – Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with coworkers, along with internal and external customers and key stakeholders Strategic Thinker – Ability to think strategically and make informed decisions to support the organizations goals Relationship Builder – Strong interpersonal skills to build trust and rapport with key stakeholders Decisiveness – Ability to make quick, informed decisions to help the team move forward Leadership – Ability to guide, inspire, and influence others to achieve common goals.
