PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Field Service Engineer is responsible for performing warranty repairs and the commissioning of SMA utility inverters in the field. Duties include commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, and learning to analyze data, operation, and maintenance activity for utility inverter applications. This role requires continually working with high voltage electricity while maintaining excellent customer service at customer sites. This position is based in the Phoenix, AZ area and involves significant regional travel, typically 4 to 5 days per week.

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Commission, troubleshoot, repair, and analyze SMA America's utility inverters in the field, via email, telephone, and site visits.
  • Develop a detailed knowledge of SMA's utility inverter products, associated SMA accessories, and third-party accessories sold by SMA.
  • Maintain accurate inventory count of spare parts provided by SMA.
  • Regularly work with high voltage DC electricity, three phase power, and relevant software and firmware of the inverters.
  • Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction while striving to lower the costs of field service.
  • Perform and maintain maintenance activities in accordance with the SMA product maintenance manual on assigned sites with SMA customer contractual obligations.
  • Ability to work weekends and/or nights on a case by case basis as customer needs require.
  • Other duties as may be required or assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3 years of experience in electrical, electronic, and/or network communications required.
  • Prior experience in the solar energy industry is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field is strongly preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.

OTHER SPECIALIZED SKILLS

  • Knowledge of solar and/or alternative energy markets preferred.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours occasionally to support service customer contracts.
  • Must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be comfortable working in outdoor environments and exposure to weather and extreme temperatures.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.

TRAVEL AND FIELD REQUIREMENTS

This role is based in the Phoenix, AZ area and requires significant regional travel, typically 4 to 5 days per week within a 4 to 5 hour radius. SMA America provides a company vehicle, tools, work clothing, and a fuel card to support your day-to-day field operations. Domestic and international travel may also be required on occasion.
