Job description
This role in the City of Edmonton's Development Services Branch, Planning Coordination Unit, is essential in shaping the city's future through sustainable transportation. Reporting to a Senior Engineer, you will apply transportation engineering and planning expertise to review complex land development applications—including statutory plans, rezoning, and road closures—to ensure short-term and long-range transportation requirements are met. The position focuses on implementing the City Plan by optimizing infrastructure for a growing city, serving multiple travel modes, and involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team and external partners on infrastructure cost, staging, and orderly development.
What will you do?
- Evaluate and quantify transportation infrastructure impacts associated with land development proposals and planning initiatives, and provide recommendations on short term and longer term requirements
- Review Transportation Impact Assessments (TIAs) by applying transportation engineering and planning knowledge, including TIA guidelines, transit service standards, active transportation, traffic safety / operations, City’s engineering design and construction standards, zoning and other bylaws, and corporate strategic direction
- Support Senior Engineer on sensitive and/or complex engineering decisions through review of any ongoing or anticipated municipal priorities or projects, emerging issues, trends, best practices, safety and operational considerations, technical studies, and/or emerging public opinions
- Prepare and document findings in the form of written responses, including council and committee reports and public inquiries, general and technical information, advisements, conditions, and/or recommendations
- Collaborate and develop positive working relationships with applicants, and internal and external partners to identify creative engineering solutions to problems, share information, and provide excellent customer service
- Under the supervision of the Senior Engineer(s), review and recommend approval of concept plans and preliminary engineering drawings, access requests and closures, road and alley closure inquiries, and other transportation requests
- Liaise with other City departments and external agencies, including Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, and adjacent municipalities in preparation of integrated planning and engineering recommendations and identification of emerging issues
- Prepare and review amendments to the Transportation System Bylaw, Arterial Roadway Assessments Bylaw, and other transportation-related policies, guidelines and procedures
- Perform periodic site checks to confirm development requirements
- Participate and contribute to public engagement activities and team meetings
- Perform other related duties as required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Transportation Engineering
- Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible related engineering work experience
- Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
Assets
- Experience preparing or evaluating land development applications (including Municipal Development Plan, Area Structure Plan, and Neighborhood Structure Plan amendments, subdivisions, and rezoning) and Transportation Impact Assessments (TIAs) from a transportation perspective
- Knowledge of and experience with Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering, as well as applicable design and construction standards, specifications, bylaws, and legislation
- Understanding of APEGA regulations and standards. Preferred knowledge of the Municipal Government Act, City Plan, and City of Edmonton Zoning Bylaw

Conditions of employment & work environment
- Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
- Salary: $94,870.14 - $118,585.27 (Annually)
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
- Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
