Job description
Work for the IMF. Work for the World.
The Statistics Department has one opening for an Economist in the Strategy, Standards, and Review Division (STASR). STASR economists contribute to the data policy and research agenda of the department, review country and policy papers, and work with country authorities to support their implementation of the IMF Data Standards Initiatives (DSIs), including through missions.
STASR is the focal division for STA’s surveillance dialogue with area and other functional departments, leading STA's review function for country papers, policy papers, and multilateral flagships. SR also oversees the development and implementation of the Fund’s data policy frameworks—such as the Data Standards Initiatives, the Data Adequacy Assessment framework, and the Third-Party Indicators Digest—and actively participates in interdepartmental projects, such as the Data and Macroframework consistency working group. The division is currently undertaking a major reform of the Data Standards Initiatives in the context of the 11th Review, which requires innovative and strategic thinking, strong analytical skills, and a collaborative attitude. SR economists also manage a diverse portfolio of countries to support their implementation of the Fund’s data policy frameworks. Finally, SR economists have opportunities to participate in Article IV and program missions through the STA Economist Program, taking the role of STA economist in area department country teams.
The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of the Division’s work program, including:
lead DSIs missions; and lead the work involved in support and monitoring countries’ adherence to data standards;
contribute to the preparation of 11th Review of the Data Standards Initiatives;
assist area department country teams to implement the new assessment of data adequacy for surveillance;
contribute to the monitoring of the data standards initiatives;
lead the reviews of country and policy papers on data issues;
contribute to the research work of the Division, including using big data techniques and AI;
Qualifications:
The candidate should have an advanced university degree (master's or PhD or equivalent) in Economics, Finance, Statistics, and/or related fields, supplemented by a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience. French would be a plus.
In addition to the minimum qualifications set forth in the job standards, the successful candidate will have experience in surveillance work and data as user and/or provider, through experience in surveillance/program work and through analytical and policy work. Strong background in macroeconomics and financial surveillance and/or statistics issues as well as excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills, a proven track record of policy relevant research, and the ability to work in teams effectively are required.
