Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

At Blue Origin, we're building the infrastructure of a spacefaring civilization. As a Senior Avionics Electrical Engineer on our Ignition Systems team, you'll own the hardware that literally starts rocket engines — safety-critical, high-reliability electronics that power the next generation of human spaceflight.

You'll work within a small, fast-moving, multi-disciplinary team where your designs fly. A typical day might involve leading an Agile scrum, conducting a schematic review, collaborating with electronics manufacturing subcontractors, and debugging a circuit in the lab — all while driving hardware from concept to qualification. This is a role for engineers who want real ownership, visible impact, and the satisfaction of seeing their work launch.

Responsibilities:

Design & Development

  • Own the full life-cycle electrical design of analog circuits used in ignition systems for rocket engines and thrusters — from concept and requirements definition through prototyping, verification, and release to production

  • Develop rugged electronic hardware assemblies meeting Class 3 standards and aligned to DO-254 and related avionics development frameworks

  • Interpret systems engineering and quality requirements as they apply to electrical product development

  • Conduct power-on, functional, acceptance, and qualification testing

Team & Program Leadership

  • Lead Agile scrum teams and provide technical mentorship to junior engineers

  • Manage avionics subsystem design schedules, identify blockers, and drive resolution

  • Develop program planning artifacts including integrated master plans, schedules, and work breakdown structures

  • Present program status, risks, and technical findings clearly to senior leadership

Systems & Safety

  • Support risk analyses, FMECAs, and DFx (design for test, manufacture, and cost) activities

  • Perform root-cause analysis of test discrepancies using fault tree and fishbone methodologies

  • Manage vehicle interface requirements and support system-level integration activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 5+ years of hands-on experience in electronics hardware development, including demonstrated technical leadership such as owning design projects end-to-end, making critical design decisions, or mentoring junior engineers

  • Direct experience with analog and digital circuit design, analysis, test, and debug

  • Demonstrated experience designing Class 3, safety-critical PCBs for flight or similarly demanding high-reliability applications

  • Proficiency with CAD layout tools and direct experience working with external board manufacturing and assembly vendors

  • Working knowledge of EMI considerations in precision analog or high-voltage circuit design, including mechanical packaging for harsh environmental conditions

  • Proven ability to operate independently, drive solutions, and lead teams through ambiguity

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical content concisely to varied audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field

  • Familiarity with aerospace avionics development standards (DO-254, ARP4754A, DO-178C, DO-330, or similar)

  • Experience developing radiation-tolerant hardware for space or similarly demanding environments
