The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

*6.1.9. Transfer and Change of Title* Any permanent employee in the competitive class who meets all of the requirements for a competitive examination, and is otherwise qualified as determined by the commissioner of citywide administrative services, shall be eligible for participation in a non-competitive examination in a different position classification provided, however, that such employee is holding a position in a similar grade.

Under the broad direction of the Administrative Director of Laboratories, the Assistant Director is responsible for subsections within the Division of Laboratories. The selected candidate will assist the Administrative Director of Laboratories with formulating and implementing standardized administrative workflows and documentation across laboratories. Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a central point of coordination for laboratory administrative deliverables, ensuring completeness, quality, and on-time execution.
  • Help lead agency-wide administrative coordination for laboratory data collection, performance reporting, and benchmarking (caseload, staffing, budget, and quality metrics).
  • Manage the annual cycle for laboratory metric collection (multi-lab coordination, deadlines, validation, submission status tracking, and executive-ready reporting).
  • Coordinate cross-lab budget planning inputs, tracking, and consolidation as directed by OCME leadership.
  • Support financial workflows including:

O Periodic spend tracking and administrative reporting.

O Personnel cost tracking, overtime administrative reporting, and budget variance summaries.

O Procurement coordination and administrative support for lab operational needs

  • Produce executive-ready summaries that integrate operational, staffing, and financial signals across laboratories.
  • Coordinate administrative components of quality management and compliance activities across laboratories in partnership with Quality Assurance leadership.
  • Standardize and monitor required documentation, schedules, and administrative evidence
  • Coordinate, execute and manage multi-laboratory projects

Qualification Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college in Library Science, Archival Science, American History or Political Science or a related area, plus four years of full-time professional experience in a governmental archives, records management center or library complex, 18 months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial or executive capacity; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. However, all candidates must have a master's degree and the 18 months supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial or executive experience as described in "1" above.
