Maryland School for the

Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families,

Main Purpose of Job

To develop and implement a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as provide an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students. To provide a language enriched environment through use of sign language, printed word and visual supports to meet the varied needs of Deaf students with additional disabilities in a specialized classroom.

Ensure equity and unbiased practices are implemented in the classroom and throughout the system of curriculum and instruction.

POSITION DUTIES

Design and implement a structured environment to meet the unique needs

of Deaf students with additional disabilities/special needs following a

modified curriculum. Adapt materials for individualized and differentiated

instruction. Assess and teach functional academic and life skills. Use formal

and informal assessments to guide individualized instruction. Work

collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, including

paraprofessionals. Create and maintain a classroom conducive to learning. Prepare

solid lesson plans based on student assessments and data, and teach lessons

using the evidenced based practices of bilingual pedagogy, applied behavior

analysis and differentiated instruction. Develop IEPs and write quarterly

progress reports; maintain lesson plan book, grade book, portfolios, unit

plans, daily attendance, and emergency classroom lesson plans. Utilize

effective classroom management for optimal learning including managing student

behavior; model appropriate behavior and promote self-control. Collect data and

follow individualized planning and behavior plans. Collaborate with families,

providing training and resources as needed on strategies and techniques to use

in the home.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Candidates must be eligible

to apply for or be willing to obtain certification by the Maryland State

Department of Education within a prescribed amount of time. Fluency in

American Sign Language and written English required. Knowledge of the Deaf

culture, Deaf Education, students with additional disabilities and ability to

teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language

acquisition backgrounds is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in Special Education or related field, Maryland State

Department of Education Certification, experience/education in Applied Behavior

Analysis and Verbal Behavior, experience working with Deaf students with autism

and/or other developmental delays.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
