About Us

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We're looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

Come build the products that accelerate how we bring medicines to patients!

Tech@Lilly is looking for a Full Stack Tech Lead to own technical direction for application development across the Medicines Development portfolio — spanning Global Regulatory Affairs (GRA), Global Scientific Communications (GSC), and Global Statistical Sciences (GSS). This is a hands-on-keyboard role, but the emphasis is on the word lead. You will write production code and also set the architectural direction, make the hard design calls, mentor a globally distributed engineering team, and be the person who can sit in a room with product owners, platform teams, cybersecurity, and business stakeholders and translate across all of them. If you want to own technical outcomes — not just execute on someone else's spec — this is the role.

What You'll Be Doing

As Full Stack Tech Lead, you are the senior technical authority for a portfolio of products that regulatory, statistical, and clinical teams rely on daily — AI-powered authoring tools, regulatory workflow automation, statistical computing interfaces, and data engineering pipelines — all operating in a GxP-validated environment.

You will write production code and make the architecture decisions that determine whether the systems your team builds are maintainable, scalable, and secure a year from now. You will partner closely with cloud platform, data science, and cybersecurity teams — engaging them early, not at the end — to ensure your solutions integrate cleanly with the broader enterprise and meet security and compliance requirements by design. You will lead a globally distributed engineering team through code reviews, architecture discussions, and direct mentorship. You will also be expected to assess what has already been built, identify what is actually broken versus what just looks messy, and make a clear-eyed call on whether to fix, refactor, or replace.

How You'll Succeed

  • Writing production code — you are hands-on across the full stack: frontend, backend, APIs, and data layers. Production-ready from day one, with automated testing and clean CI/CD from the start. You are not a hands-off architect.
  • Owning the application architecture — making design decisions on service boundaries, data models, API contracts, authentication/authorization patterns, and integration design. You design systems that are modular, auditable, and built for a regulated environment where data integrity and validation are non-negotiable. You know when a simple solution beats a clever one.
  • Partnering with cybersecurity and platform teams — you engage information security, cloud platform, and data engineering teams as design partners, not gatekeepers. You understand security requirements well enough to surface them early and incorporate them into your architecture before they become remediation problems. You do not throw solutions over the fence.
  • Assessing existing systems with a clear head — you can walk into a codebase or architecture you didn't build, get oriented quickly, identify root causes rather than symptoms, and recommend a realistic phased path forward. You don't default to rewriting everything.
  • Integrating AI capabilities where they add value — LLMs, RAG architectures, agentic workflows — applied with engineering discipline and the judgment to know when the complexity is worth it.
  • Setting and enforcing engineering standards — code reviews, testing practices, CI/CD hygiene, and deployment reliability. You raise the floor for the whole team, not just your own work.
  • Leading engineers across geographies — serving as the US-based technical anchor for a globally distributed team. You lead by doing, not just directing.

What You Should Bring

  • Production experience building and shipping full stack web applications — not just prototypes. Modern frontend and backend frameworks, REST/GraphQL APIs, relational and NoSQL databases. You have owned a production system and dealt with what happens after it goes live.
  • Architectural judgment — you've made real design decisions under real constraints, can defend them under scrutiny, and recognize when you got something wrong. You know the difference between technical debt worth carrying and technical debt that will sink you.
  • Strong working knowledge of at least one major cloud platform (e.g., AWS, Azure) — compute, storage, networking, managed services. You can deploy and operate your own applications without handing off every infrastructure decision.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, automated testing, and infrastructure as code (e.g., GitHub Actions, Docker, Terraform). You treat deployment reliability as part of the job.
  • Security awareness — you understand authentication and authorization patterns, design for least-privilege data access and audit logging, and engage naturally with information security as a collaborator. You know how to bring security into architecture conversations early rather than finding out at the end what needs to change.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML integration in production applications — LLM APIs, RAG architectures, vector databases. You know how to get AI out of a notebook and into a maintainable production feature.
  • Experience with data pipelines and integration patterns — ETL/ELT, structured and unstructured data, and familiarity with modern data platforms (e.g., Databricks, Spark).
  • Tech lead experience — code reviews, architecture ownership, mentoring engineers, setting technical direction for a product or team. You lead through craft and credibility, not title.

Your Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • 5 or more years of professional software engineering experience building production web applications
  • 2 or more years in a tech lead or senior engineer role, owning architecture decisions and setting technical direction for a product or team
