GENERAL DESCRIPTION 

This position is a 20 hr per week undergraduate advising graduate assistantship in the BSOS Feller Center for Academic Advising and  Career Planning and offers an in-depth educational and professional position to a student working simultaneously towards a graduate degree. The areas of concentration for this assistantship include general academic advising, program planning and implementation,  and general administrative functions. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Admission and active enrollment in a UMCP graduate program are required. 

  •  Ability to manage graduate-level coursework along with work responsibilities.  

  •  Experience in student personnel administration, counseling, or academic advising.  

  •  Ability to learn and work in multiple University records and communications systems used to advise, support, and report data on students. 

  • Ability to handle work with computer-assisted advising technology, word processing, and databases.

  •  Excellent assessment and communication skills. 

  •  Organized, creative problem solver, effective in time management, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and flexible. 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

● Provide academic advising to students interested in or enrolled in majors in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. 

● Work with students in academic difficulty, including helping them articulate problems and find solutions.  

● Refer students to appropriate campus services. 

● Conduct academic audits with students, including explaining graduation requirements, scrutinizing transcripts, correcting errors, and communicating with departments as necessary. 

● Work in conjunction with the coordinator of the BSOS Peer Mentor Program to plan and implement all aspects of the program, including co-teaching a one-credit Peer Mentor course. 

● Teach UNIV100, a semester-long orientation 1-credit course for freshmen. 

● Conduct graduation planning workshop sessions for new students. 

DURATION 

This position is a one-year, renewable assistantship coinciding with the University's academic program and is a 12-month graduate assistant staff position.  

SCHEDULE 

This position works 20 hours per week on a regular weekly schedule, during the period M-F 9:00-5:00. A weekly schedule will be designed around your class schedule. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, but only with significant advanced notice for major events. The position follows the UMD holiday calendar, not the student holiday calendar. 

REMUNERATION 

The full 12-month equivalent annual salary for the position is $35,426.00 plus tuition remission (up to 10 credits each Fall and Spring semester). The salary will be prorated for the shorter initial appointment term. Per campus guidelines, the salary may be higher for a PhD student than for a master's student. Stipend rates may change per campus policy. The average work week is 20 hours.

Must be a registered graduate student in good standing enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland and must be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
