An Able Body Seaman is a skilled Deck Ratings, and his/her main task is to assist in keeping the ship clean and well maintained, and to assist in all other Deck Operating work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Imposes and maintain safety consciousness.
Cleans, rust calling and paint the vessels hull, decks, masts and superstructure.
Cleans, rust scaling and paint the various vessel’s inside/enclosed space.
Maintains and rust scaling of the tanks.
Maintains the vessel’s running gear and mooring/anchoring equipment.
Maintains safety and lifesaving equipment when ordered/requested.
Maintains and onboard repairs of the storing loading/discharging gear and associated equipment
Keeps quarters, as well as the common ones, clean and tidy.
Keeps watch as directed by the Bosun in port.
Participates in all jobs and tasks in connection with safety of own vessel or the other and/or persons and/or environment as directed by the person in charge.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
The able-bodied Seaman reports directly to the Bosun. However, he/she shall also be able to take action independently when so requires. He/she is a senior member of the deck crew and shall participate in all deck activities.
Shall be familiar with all subjects in the Deck Crew Familiarization form.
Must be able to train lower rank deck ratings in all kind of deck related work matters.
The A.B. shall be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Management System (SMS), including his/her responsibilities in the Safety Organization according to the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.
Will become part of the bridge’s navigational watch if necessary, and while the vessel is in port, part of the deck watch, according to the onboard established roster, where he/she answers directly to the officer in charge of the watch.
While on bridge watch, or on watch in port, he/she will perform his duties and jobs according to the National and International Regulations and valid company’s standing orders as directed/instructed by the officer in charge of the watch.
The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment; also, must be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum two years experience working in a shipboard environment is required.
Basic to Intermediate level English verbal and writing skills, including the proper use of English grammar is required.

EDUCATION
Highschool diploma or foreign equivalent is required.
Must have completed all requisite STCW training from a recognized educational institution; or issuance of such training from a STCW approved/accredited maritime or marine entity. STCW training certificates must be current at all times.
