Job description

Position Summary 

This position will provide day-to-day leadership for the Human Resources (HR) function within the Office of Public Safety.  These functions will include oversight and direction for all areas of HR including compliance, training, safety, and employee performance management. 

Essential Functions 

The Director of Human Resources will be responsible for the following duties: 

  • Oversee day-to-day Human Resources operations in the department. 

  • Liaison between the Office of Public Safety and MDO-HR and Central OHR. 

  • Oversee Safety & Health programs for the department, including maintaining communications with the City’s Risk Management Division. 

  • Plan and execute the department’s annual training calendar, which includes the City’s Learning Management System. 

  • Manage conflict resolution and employee performance issues. 

  • Manage recruitment, onboarding and offboarding. 

  • Lead on the department’s DEI and Racial Equity strategy. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Strong communication and time management skills. 

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects, tasks, and priorities in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 

  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team. 

  • Show initiative and be solution focused. 

  • Understanding of best practices and regulations within HR. 

  • Understanding of and experience applying compliance in labor laws and workforce regulations. 

  • Four (4) year college degree preferred, but a combination of education and experience will be considered. 

  • At least 2 to 5 years of experience working in the human resources field. 

  • Previous experience in a government environment is required. 

  • 5+ years of management experience is required.

Salary Range: $72,000 - $90,000
