The Upholsterer is to assist in the general up keep and maintenance of guest and crew areas in regards to carpentry, wall coverings and soft furnishings.

To find or suggest suitable, practical solutions of how areas can be refurbished to meet the needs of the given situation, and where possible, provide resolution to problems that will meet the luxury image required onboard.

Assist General Manager in ensuring compliance with company policy and ships safety in accordance with guidelines issued by RSSC.

Responsibility and Authority

  • Guest Experience
  • Demonstrates genuine concern for guests’ wellbeing at all times;
  • Ensures that guest areas are refurbished and/or maintained with minimal impact to our guests onboard experience, including but not limited to noise, chemical fumes, disruption to guest’s environment, appropriate timing of work being carried out.
  • Operational and Administrative
  • Organizes work in a systematic way to reduce overall impact and disruption to guest/ ships environment.
  • Ensures that sufficient materials are available to complete routine tasks, passing requisitions to appropriate onboard management to order materials as required.
  • Reupholsters and varnishes ships furnishing as and when required to maintain overall standards in all guest and crew areas.
  • Repairs broken furniture as required to ensure ships service levels do not suffer.
  • Assists Housekeeping on turnaround days for emergency maintenance inside staterooms and suites. (loose hinges, scratches on furniture, silicon in showers/ bathtubs, etc)
  • Participates in weekly inspections of public areas together with General Manager, Chief Purser, Chief Housekeeper, and Staff Captain.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of all fabrics, tools available on board
  • Installs carpets and wall paper when required
  • Assists guests with repairing broken luggage, bags, shoes etc as required by the Chief Purser.
  • Performs all other duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Responsible for purchasing and ordering materials and tools required to perform assigned duties
  • Report/Written Recap of Daily Duties performed to be submitted to General Manager & Chief Housekeeper
  • Training and Development
  • Trains new colleagues on work related procedures.
  • Learns new techniques from colleagues to expand and develop own knowledge where appropriate.
  • Completes, participates and promotes RSSC’s Service Training Programs.
  • Assists the General Manager in implementing new work related guidelines, procedures and practices set by the corporate office;

  • Monitor the practical application of the Company's policy, procedures and instructions.
  • Immediately report to the Master any instances where the vessel is unable or fails to comply with any Company’s policy, procedure, instruction, and any safety, environmental, or security requirement.
  • Participate in crew and passenger safety drills according to instructions from ship’s command;
  • Comply with company safety and pollution prevention regulations.

  • Ships Background in a similar role preferred;
  • Profile
  • Must be fluent in English. Be able to perform basic geometrical and numerical calculations. Understanding of the highest level of service;
  • Have a proven background of Upholstery and Carpentry experience with sufficient knowledge of fabrics and materials related to this field.
  • Understanding of the highest level of service;
  • Outgoing personality, open minded and flexible;
  • Ability to work in an international environment;
  • Ability to perform well under pressure;
  • Excellent appearance and excellent social skills;
  • Well organized.
