Job description
We are rebuilding biotech for the AI era.
When a breakthrough is delayed, the world waits. Getting a molecule from discovery to patients, or a crop from lab to field, involves thousands of slow, manual, disconnected steps. AI has the potential to change this, compressing decades of R&D work into years. But that only happens when clean, structured scientific data and AI are built into how science gets done.
Benchling is the AI platform for biotech R&D. Scientists use Benchling to design experiments, capture structured data, and run AI agents and models directly in their workflows. Over 200,000 scientists around the world trust Benchling to power their most important work, from academic labs to Sanofi, Moderna, and more than half of the world's top 50 biopharma.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Benchling is seeking a Software Engineer to join our Study Lifecycle team, one of two teams that is focused on making software that can be used in more regulated environments. Given our mission to accelerate the pace of life sciences research, we have to make scientific experimentation easier, more reproducible, and efficient via Benchling! Our team is foundational to Benchling’s success, given the critical role of designing and learning from experiments in the scientific process. We provide ways to aggregate data within Benchling and process them for use in analyses.
As a member of this team, you'll play a key role in building intuitive interfaces, developing robust backend services, and ensuring our platform scales to meet the needs of researchers around the world. You'll collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver a product that improves scientific workflows and empower groundbreaking discoveries. In this role, you’ll get to work on a few critical areas of the Benchling product:
- The Study platform, which allows scientists to organize related experiments for a drug candidate or research campaign
- An Analysis integration, where Benchling objects are transformed into datasets ready for data scientists with pre-built charts
- Cross-cutting Sample Testing functionality, that supports tracking of biologically relevant samples that need to be tested, including patient samples collected for clinical trials
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own projects end-to-end, from initial design, to prototype, to large-scale rollout.
- Engineer across our stack, from designing and implementing backend models & APIs to crafting rich frontend components and architecture.
- Work closely with product managers, designers, and other teams to build the best product possible for our users.
- Create entirely net-new products, while also investing in taking existing products to feature completeness.
- Writes extremely well-documented and well-tested code that follows company best practices.
- As a member of the engineering team, you'll be an integral part of how we mature our tooling, best practices, and engineering processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Have around 2-4 years of experience in a full-time software engineering role.
- Build software with a product-first approach. You ship code quickly and care about the real world impact of your code.
- Experience developing both user-facing & backend experiences in a web application.
- Experience with React, or similar javascript-based frontend application frameworks.
- Enjoy a high-degree of ownership in key areas of the software product you’re building.
- Are interested in learning more about life science (prior knowledge is not required; desire to learn is a must).
HOW WE WORK
We offer a flexible hybrid work arrangement that prioritizes in-office collaboration. Employees are expected to be on-site 3 days per week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday).
