This position provides foreign language interpretation, written translation and assists in education for non-English speaking customers, students or participants of the organization. Challenges include accurately interpreting and communicating information in an unbiased, clear and concise manner with patients, families, healthcare staff and physicians.

Responsibilities

  • Spanish Interpreter communication between the staff and non-English speaking population.
  • Strong Knowledge of Medical Terminology in both English and target languate.
  • Translates written educational materials and documents in accordance with readability guidelines.
  • Follows up with the non-English speaking population to inquire about the status of individual patients and answers questions.
  • Assists the non-English speaking population in completing medical, financial and related forms.
  • Escorts non-English speaking population to the appropriate service area.
  • May provide patient education and discharge planning in conjunction with nursing and rehabilitation staff.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret and translate verbal and written text.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in an efficient, productive manner maintaining composure and sensitivity in accordance with the environment of health care services.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Associate's degree in a foreign language, or equivalency.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • National Certification (CCHI or NBCMI) or active pursuit of certification.
  • Minimum 40-hour Medical Interpreter Training from a recognized program.
  • Strong Knowledge of Medical Terminology in both English and target language.
  • Experience in Acute Care or Hospital Settings, including ED and specialty clinics.
  • Understanding of Interpreter Ethics & Standards of Practice (confidentiality, impartiality, role boundaries).
  • Cultural Competency & Patient Advocacy Awareness, especially with varied and LEP populations.
  • Ability to Interpret Across Modalities (in-person, video, telephonic).
  • Excellent Interpersonal & Communication Skills, including managing high-stress encounters.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA & Healthcare Compliance Requirements.
