Job description

Are you excited about driving the evolution of autonomous vehicle technology? Join our innovative Embodied AI team at General Motors, where we're creating machine learning solutions that enhance the safety and reliability of autonomous driving in real-world environments. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer within the Onboard Embodied AI organization, you'll play a crucial role in designing, architecting, and deploying cutting-edge machine learning models that transform raw sensor data into effective driving actions.

Your expertise will significantly impact how vehicles navigate various scenarios and conditions. You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Lead the end-to-end design, development, and deployment of advanced onboard machine learning models ensuring real-time inference and resilient autonomous driving behavior.
  • Architect complex machine learning projects, from inception to validation, focusing on scalability, reliability, and safety considerations.
  • Drive innovation in neural network architectures and training methods to optimize real-time deployment.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to fellow ML engineers, elevating our engineering practices and fostering a culture of innovation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate ML capabilities smoothly within autonomous vehicle systems.
  • Shape technical roadmaps and influence strategic ML priorities that align with company goals and product timelines.

Your qualifications should include

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 4+ years of experience with large-scale Foundation Models, including LLMs, VLAs, and vision-focused models.
  • Extensive background in developing and deploying real-time machine learning systems for onboard applications.
  • Proven expertise in creating robust deep learning models that map sensor data to actionable outputs in safety-critical environments.
  • Deep understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision techniques, neural architecture design, representation learning, real-time inference, and optimization under uncertainty.
  • Strong programming skills, particularly in Python and C++, with hands-on experience in modern ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical strategy and promote ML excellence across teams.
  • Experience in AV/ADAS is a significant advantage.

Compensation for this role ranges from $180,000 to $280,000, and actual salaries will be determined based on various relevant factors. Additional bonuses based on company and individual performance are available.

This position requires a hybrid work model, with a minimum of three days per week at the Mountain View Technical Center in the Bay Area. Relocation assistance may be provided for the right candidate. Additionally, successful candidates will have access to a company vehicle evaluation program, allowing you to drive and evaluate a General Motors vehicle after completing a motor vehicle report review.
