Job description

We’re seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to join the team at SGS, where precision, quality, and safety are at the core of everything we do.

In this role, you’ll take ownership of day-to-day machining activities across both CNC and manually controlled equipment, producing high-quality work to exact engineering specifications. You’ll collaborate closely with operations and management teams and play an important role in supporting and developing apprentices and shop personnel.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out precision machining tasks in line with engineering drawings and specifications
  • Operating and programming CNC and manual machine tools in a safe and efficient manner
  • Training, mentoring, and supporting apprentices and workshop staff
  • Ensuring strict compliance with safe work practices, procedures, and quality standards
  • Maintaining accurate records including job cards, inspection data, and quality documentation
  • Undertaking ongoing training and upskilling to meet evolving client requirements
  • Supporting business growth through involvement in new projects and client diversification
  • Reporting equipment faults and maintenance needs promptly to the Operations Team/OEM
  • Caring for all tools, gauges, and measuring equipment to ensure accuracy and longevity
  • Working shift rotations as required to meet operational demands
  • Identifying and escalating any safety or procedural conflicts

About you:

  • Trade qualified Machinist with relevant certification
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a customer-focused manufacturing environment
  • Strong experience operating both manual and CNC machining equipment, including programming
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing excellence principles (Lean, 5S, waste reduction, visual management)
  • Knowledge of different steel grades and machining characteristics
  • Current forklift and other relevant licences (or willingness to obtain)
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with customers, suppliers, and colleagues
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety
  • Physically fit and capable of performing workshop-based duties
