Job Description:

The Sustainability Specialist is responsible for the following functions, in addition to other duties as assigned:

  • Assist in the development of systems that enable sustainable, bottom-line business decisions.
  • Measure, monitor, manage, and validate sustainability and energy metrics; compile data and prepare annual and bi‑annual summaries of goals, progress, and achievements.
  • Support the development, implementation, and management of energy reduction projects, best practices, and store-level initiatives.
  • Assist in auditing all areas of the business to assess compliance with sustainability goals; audits require significant on-site observation, education, and instruction.
  • Promote industry-leading sustainability best practices related to product specification, production, manufacturing, sourcing, and distribution; advise business partners on identifying energy conservation and environmental benefits.
  • Develop and present training programs and educational opportunities to support sustainability initiatives for Company associates.
  • Serve as an internal resource on sustainability trends and innovations; research developments in the field, attend applicable conferences, and cultivate industry and trade contacts.
  • Assist key stakeholders in developing internal and external sustainability communications, including collaboration with Public Relations to communicate progress to customers and associates through multiple media outlets.
  • Act as a change agent, introducing positive disruption that supports an enterprise‑wide understanding of sustainability objectives and performance.
  • Lead development of the bi‑annual Sustainability Report, including data collection, narrative development, and performance validation.
  • Assist with analyzing and managing energy management projects and store expense budgets.
  • Serve as a member of the power outage response team, overseeing fleet‑wide power outages, maintaining hourly communications with stakeholders and senior leadership, and ensuring operational recovery (including refrigeration systems reaching setpoint and alarm resolution).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the associate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:

Education/Experience                                                                                                                          

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, business, marketing, or a related field.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a related role, preferably within a retail or multi‑site operational

Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations

This position requires a valid driver's license for business travel.
