Job description

The Staff Accountant is responsible for owning day-to-day transactional accounting across multiple funds, supporting the monthly close process, and serving as a backup and escalation point for accounts payable, reporting to the Controller on the Accounting team. This is a full-time position. The schedule generally includes weekday office hours at our Irvine location, with occasional evenings or weekends during audit, year-end close, or ministry events for a total of 40 hours per week. Although the position is regularly Monday-Friday, ministry happens in the evenings and during the weekends. All Mariners staff are expected to work during Christmas Eve and Easter services, as well as participate in Rooted once/year.This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Responsibilities

  • Record and reconcile all cash activity including weekly giving deposits, online giving platform transfers, merchant card settlements, and bank transfers, ensuring proper fund allocation for restricted and designated gifts.
  • Assist with credit card and accounts payable processing, including reviewing coding and approvals, posting transactions, and reconciling vendor and cardholder activity.
  • Record journal entries for payroll allocations, depreciation, prepaid expense amortization, and other recurring month-end activity.
  • Support ancillary business units of the church by recording transactions and preparing account reconciliations as assigned.
  • Track restricted fund activity, including releases from restriction as purpose or time conditions are satisfied, and prepare supporting schedules for restricted fund balances.
  • Assist with month-end close by preparing assigned reconciliations, variance analyses, and supporting schedules for the senior accountant’s review.
  • Support the annual audit by preparing requested schedules and pulling supporting documentation.
  • Provide backup coverage for accounts payable during absences and peak periods.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
  • Three or more years of general ledger accounting experience, with nonprofit or fund accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP as applied to nonprofits, including ASC 958.
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct and intermediate Excel skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
