Senior Database Administrator - PostgreSQL (Hybrid)

Irwin is pushing PostgreSQL to its limits with complex schemas, heavy analytics, custom triggers, and integrations. We are seeking a Senior Database Administrator to own, assess the reliability, performance, and scalability of our PostgreSQL databases. 

You will be the go-to expert, working with engineering and architecture teams to optimize queries, maintain schema health, and scale our platform. This is a high-impact role with challenges and opportunities to shape our data infrastructure. 

Responsibilities: 

• Lead query tuning, slow query investigations, and performance baseline enforcement   

• Develop materialized view strategies and incremental refresh tooling   

• Manage vacuuming, table health, and index hygiene   

• Oversee PostgreSQL major version upgrades and replication cutovers   

• Resolve concurrency issues, deadlocks, and optimize triggers   

• Manage connection pooling and workload balancing   

• Build frameworks for performance testing and observability dashboards   

• Support integrations (Snowflake, dbt, Reverse-ETL) and optimize data flows  

• Balance PostgreSQL performance across both OLTP application workloads and analytical/reporting workloads. 

• Lead the existing slow query backlog using tools such as EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN ANALYZE to diagnose planner behavior and execution of bottlenecks. 

• Partner with backend engineers to identify and eliminate recurring N+1 query patterns and prevent similar regressions.  

Required Qualifications:  

• Extensive expertise in PostgreSQL internals, architecture, and administration   

• Demonstrated success optimizing complex queries and addressing performance bottlenecks   

• 6+ years working as a DBA  

• Hands-on experience managing materialized views and supporting high-concurrency environments   

• Advanced skills in index design and execution of major PostgreSQL version upgrades   

• Exceptional communication abilities, with a record of accomplishment of mentoring and collaborating across technical teams   

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent work experience 

Preferred Qualifications:   

• Experience with Snowflake data warehousing   

• Working knowledge of dbt for data modeling and transformation   

• Familiarity with Reverse-ETL processes and business intelligence tooling   

Additional Assets: 

• Experience implementing logical replication in PostgreSQL   

• Background supporting large-scale SaaS applications   

• Proficiency with PgBouncer and background job processing systems
