St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Herbicide Applicator for our well established Road & Bridge Division whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.
The St. Johns County Road & Bridge Division is responsible for the maintenance of St. Johns County roads, bridges and drainage systems. This includes but is not limited to roadway and pothole patching, sidewalk construction and replacement, drainage pipe and structure cleaning and replacing, ditch excavating, tree trimming and removal, roadside mowing, etc.
Employees work cooperatively as part of maintenance crews to complete work in a safe and effective manner. Safety is the #1 priority at Road & Bridge. The goal at Road & Bridge is to provide a safe and efficient transportation system to ensure the mobility of people, goods and services in St. Johns County.
The newly selected Herbicide Applicator will work independently and as a member of a Road & Bridge crew to complete the work necessary to maintain St. Johns County’s roads, bridges and drainage systems.
The ideal Herbicide Applicator candidate must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensures vegetation management operations complies with safe work practices, chemical labels, and manufacturers’ requirements; uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
Coordinates with supervisors to schedule vegetation management in ditches, ponds, creeks, waterways, fence lines, guardrails, shoulders and outfalls; provides other personnel with the necessary instructions, equipment and supplies to perform small vegetation control operations.
Computes quantities of chemicals and determines types of chemicals needed in vegetation control; calibrates spray equipment.
Prepares, completes and tracks work orders using the computerized maintenance management system.
Maintains records and reports of chemicals used for Florida Department of Agriculture and Department of Natural Resources.
Drives dump truck, tankers, and crew trucks.
Attends safety, training and administrative meetings.
Responds to after-hours emergencies.
Maintains a full-time presence on the job.
Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a state-certified Commercial Herbicide and Pesticide Applicator's License within ninety days.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills to serve others.
Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
Must be able to operate a computer.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations.
Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and operation procedures.
Knowledge herbicides and their proper application.
Skill in the operation of a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment.
Skill in the use of assigned tools.
Skill in oral and written communication.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Working Conditions may include some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.), extreme noises, odors, heights and/or dust.
Risk/Safety Conditions: This position has some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, assault and battery, heavy equipment, communicable diseases, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
Physical Activity may include sitting, walking, lifting heavy objects up to 25lbs, kneeling, crouching, reaching, or standing.
