St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Part Time Library Assistant for the Hastings Branch Library, of the St. Johns County Public Library System.  This position will work 20 to 28 hours weekly which may include weekends and occasional evenings. This position is assigned primarily to the Public Services Desks and works directly with the public, which requires strong customer service skills.

St Johns County Public Library System (SJCPLS) encourages a love of literature, the arts, and lifelong learning by providing a variety of information, resources, and entertainment to the community. SJCPLS serves all areas of St. Johns County, including St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fruit Cove, and Hastings. The Library System has six branches, two bookmobiles, and offers books-by-mail service to eligible patrons. In addition to books, periodicals, and online databases, SJCPLS offers computer access, notary services, Inter-Library Loan, access to a Seed Library, test proctoring, and many volunteer opportunities. The Library System also offers a dynamic range of programming for adults, teens, and children.

Employees work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and provide support across circulation, reference, and youth and adult service areas. Employees may be assigned to work at other library branches, county locations, or outreach events on an occasional, semi-permanent, or permanent basis, depending on staffing needs and community demand, and may be assigned to another branch as part of the county-wide library system.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with providing reader’s advisory, reference and general information to patrons; assists in providing assistance and instruction regarding the use of databases, catalogs, and computer applications.

  • Assists patrons at circulation desk; checks materials in and out; registers patrons; processes hold requests; collects fines and fees.

  • Empties book drop.

  • Collects and compiles statistics, as assigned.

  • Follows cash management procedures.

  • Assists in sorting donated materials.

  • Assists in cataloging new acquisitions.

  • Assists in the assessment and repair of damaged items.

  • Shelves circulated and in-house materials; reads shelves to ensure accuracy of material placement.

  • Assists patrons with computer reservations and computer operation.

  • Assists in the development of children or adult programming.

  • Assists in developing publicity materials, including handouts and bulletin board displays.

  • Works a flexible/rotating schedule to include weekends, evenings and holidays or also at other branches as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.

  • Minimum one (1) year of customer service or library experience. College education may be substituted for experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.

  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.

  • Must be able to operate a computer.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge of library operations, activities, services, and principles.

  • Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.

  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.

  • Skill in the provision of customer service and projection a positive public service demeanor, reference support, and circulation desk services.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

  • Working Conditions may include some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.), extreme noises, odors, heights and/or dust.

  • Physical Activity may include sitting, walking, lifting heavy objects up to 25lbs, kneeling, crouching, reaching, or standing.
