Job description

About Dwelly

Dwelly — a UK-based, AI-enabled lettings and property management platform, that is growing through a roll-up strategy acquiring estate agencies. The company leverages two arms: i) acquiring existing letting agencies, effectively buying its highly sticky, recurring revenue-type landlords portfolios, and then ii) building a top-notch technology to automate tenant management, payments, and post-rental property maintenance. The company seamlessly integrates AI services to automate all business processes within brick-and-mortar real estate agencies, integrating them into a tech-enabled digital letting platform in two months to radically improve the user experiences and increase efficiency of the business.

We’re a fast-growing, product-focused company, backed by top-tier investors and led by a team with deep experience in real estate, technology, and operations.

Position summary

We are looking for an experienced Senior Legal Counsel, with an exceptional private practice grounding and in-house experience to help scale our legal team - you will be the second legal hire below the GC. The role will suit a generalist able to help with all aspects of the business and provide support for any and all legal matters in a fast paced growth environment. A background in M&A is a must given Dwelly’s business model, alongside exposure to other legal matters which a scaling tech business is likely to face (fund raising, litigation, employment, compliance, general commercial, etc..).

Key responsibilities

1. M&A & Strategic Transactions
Own and lead M&A activity end-to-end, including structuring, due diligence, negotiations, and execution. Work closely with internal stakeholders and external advisors to ensure smooth delivery, while applying strong commercial judgement throughout.

2. Legal Frameworks & Policy Development
Design, implement, and maintain legal frameworks, policies, and processes across the business. This includes supporting expansion into new markets and ensuring the company operates on solid legal foundations as it scales.

3. Board & Investor Advisory
Act as a key legal partner to the board and investor directors. You will be responsible for clearly communicating legal matters, supporting decision-making, and ensuring alignment on key strategic initiatives.

4. Cross-functional Risk & Legal Leadership
Operate as a true business partner across teams (product, operations, finance), helping to identify and mitigate risks while enabling progress. Take a pragmatic approach — thinking beyond strict legal boundaries — and, over time, support and mentor more junior members of the legal team.

Qualifications and Preferred Background

Core Requirements:

    • 5+ years PQE (minimum)
    • In-house experience, ideally including building or scaling a legal function from near zero
    • Background from a top-tier US firm or Magic Circle (UK/AUS qualified)
    • Strong M&A experience

Preferred:

    • Data protection law experience
    • AI regulation exposure
    • Tech/start-up experience

Nice to Have:

  • Lettings law / estate agency experience
  • UK employment law knowledge
  • Interest or experience in coding
  • Experience beyond pure legal (e.g. compliance, operations)
  • Strong communication skills and fluency in English
  • Higher education degree
  • Startup mindset: resilient, adaptable, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment
  • Customer-centric approach
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, solutions-oriented mindset
  • Ability to operate independently with high ownership in ambiguous environments

Compensation and benefits

  • Competitive salary with the potential for equity options based on performance, recognising exceptional contributions to our integration success.
  • Location: UK

What is it like being a Dwell-er

Feel free to check out Dwelly Core Principles. That’s about what we believe in, how we operate and make decisions.

What we offer is not a fancy office or a static workplace. Instead, this is solving one of worlds’ most complex problems in the largest consumer industry in the world (residential rentals), to improve the experience for >30% of households (>5M in the UK, and >100M including EU and US) that live in rental homes.

This is about disrupting the largest, most antiquated industry in the world, with one of the strongest operational and technical teams that exist in the UK and the EU. We work hard, and we shoot for extremely ambitious results. But we want people to be proud of what they’ve built and be able to look back and say one day “hell yeah, that was me that did it all”.

  • Customer obsession rather than competitive focus
  • Passion for invention
  • Operational excellence
  • Long-term thinking

By applying for this position, you consent to the processing and storage of your personal data for recruitment purposes for up to 365 days, in accordance with our data retention policy and applicable data protection laws.
