Job description

About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer to join our Electronic Trading technology team. This role provides senior technical leadership for ultra-low-latency infrastructure and network platforms that power our electronic trading environments.

    Role impact:
This position is critical to ensuring the performance, stability, and integrity of Wells Fargo’s electronic trading platforms. The Principal Engineer directly influences trade execution outcomes, operational resilience, and adherence to regulatory requirements in highly sensitive, low-latency environments.

Low Latency Switching & Network Hardware

    • Engineer and operate specialized ultra-low-latency trading networks using industry-leading platforms
    • Leverage Arista ultra-low-latency switching, including FPGA-enabled platforms (e.g., 7130 series), for deterministic performance
    • Utilize Metamako (Arista) FPGA-based L1/L2 switching and signal regeneration for precision packet handling
    • Deploy NVIDIA / Mellanox high-performance Ethernet adapters and switches to achieve low jitter and precise timing
    • Implement Solarflare (Xilinx/AMD) and ExaBlaze/ExaNIC network interface technologies to enable kernel bypass and optimize trading latency

Operating System & Network Performance Engineering

    • Lead performance tuning across operating systems and network stacks for latency-sensitive trading workloads
    • Optimize CPU pinning, NUMA alignment, interrupt handling, and kernel scheduling to minimize jitter and tail latency
    • Design deterministic networking and memory locality strategies to maximize throughput and execution consistency

    Latency Observability & Performance Analytics

    • Own and enhance latency observability frameworks to measure and govern execution performance
    • Utilize tools such as Corvil (Pico) for packet-level latency visibility, jitter analysis, and tick-to-trade monitoring
    • Analyze microbursts, packet loss, and execution anomalies through advanced latency analytics
    • Drive data-led root cause analysis and enforce vendor performance accountability

Colocation, Proximity Hosting & Market Access

    • Lead deployment and operations of trading platforms within exchange-adjacent colocation environments
    • Manage infrastructure within Equinix facilities to ensure proximity-driven latency advantages
    • Oversee Pico-managed colocation services, market access solutions, and global trading connectivity

    In this role, you will:

    • Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups
    • Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking
    • Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions
    • Lead the architecture, engineering, and operation of ultra-low-latency trading infrastructure in exchange-adjacent, collocated data centers
    • Own end-to-end latency engineering across network, OS, and kernel layers, including observability, analytics, and regression detection
    • Design and manage specialized low-latency hardware and network platforms, including colocation and proximity hosting strategies
    • Define and optimize carrier connectivity to global trading venues
    • Deliver complex infrastructure modernization initiatives while enforcing engineering standards, automation, and best practices
    • Partner cross-functionally with Trading, Platform Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to ensure resiliency, regulatory compliance, and audit readiness
    • Communicate effectively with senior leadership, including escalation-ready updates on system performance and risk posture
    • Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions
    • Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership

    Required Qualifications:

    • 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
    • 5+ years of experience with latency observability tooling (e.g., Corvil)
    • 5+ years of experience with Linux systems and low-latency network engineering
    • 5+ years of experience supporting electronic trading or ultra-low-latency platforms
    • 5+ years program managing complex colo based infrastructure deliverables

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Proven delivery leadership within regulated, production‑critical trading or financial services environments
    • Expertise in defining and governing ultra‑low‑latency connectivity strategies utilizing specialized financial‑market carriers
    • Hands‑on experience overseeing deployment and operation of electronic trading platforms in exchange‑proximate and collocated facilities
    • Strong ownership of latency measurement, monitoring, and observability platforms to govern execution performance and detect regressions
    • Demonstrated capability in engineering and operating specialized low‑latency trading networks using industry‑standard hardware and platforms
