Job description

Make communications matter. Drive accountability. Improve outcomes for consumers.

At AFCA, our purpose is clear: to deliver fairness in financial services. Within this mission, the Code Compliance & Monitoring Group plays a critical role, independently monitoring and enforcing industry Codes of Practice to lift standards, strengthen accountability and improve outcomes for consumers across Australia.

We’re now seeking an experienced and highly credible Head of Communications to shape and lead the strategic communications agenda for this influential group and its five independent Code Compliance Committees

Why this role matters

This is not a traditional communications role. It positions communications as a core regulatory tool, using insight-led, targeted and authoritative messaging to influence behaviour, shine a light on industry performance, and drive measurable improvements in practice.

You will ensure the work of the Committees is communicated with clarity, independence and impact, strengthening transparency, building trust, and elevating the profile and influence of the Codes across industry, media and stakeholders.

What you’ll be responsible for

Reporting to the General Manager, Code Compliance & Monitoring and with one direct report, you will:

  • Set the strategic direction for communications and media, ensuring focus on what will have the greatest regulatory and consumer impact.
  • Lead communications and media engagement for five independent Code Compliance Committees, each with its own governance, stakeholders and priorities.
  • Translate complex monitoring insights, findings and data into clear, compelling and accessible communications for industry, media and the public.
  • Act as a trusted adviser to Committee Chairs and senior leaders on messaging, media strategy, reputational risk and high‑profile or sensitive issues.
  • Use communications deliberately to highlight systemic issues, clarify expectations and drive better industry practices.
  • Build strong relationships across AFCA, with regulators, industry bodies, consumer stakeholders and key media contacts.
  • Establish practical, consistent ways of working that lift quality, timeliness and impact across communications and media.
  • Lead and develop a small, high‑performing team—balancing strategic leadership with hands‑on delivery when it matters most.

What you’ll bring

You are a seasoned communications leader with credibility, judgement and presence. You will bring:

  • Proven experience in a senior communications, media or engagement role, ideally within a complex or regulated environment.
  • A strong track record using communications to influence outcomes, shape public narrative and drive behavioural change.
  • Experience advising senior leaders and boards or committees on high‑profile, sensitive or contentious matters.
  • Demonstrated expertise in media strategy, reputation management and responding to scrutiny.
  • Exceptional ability to translate complex decisions, findings and data into clear, authoritative public messaging.
  • Sound judgement under pressure, with a calm and confident approach to issues and risk management.
  • Strong leadership capability, with experience building and leading small, high‑performing teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Communications, Public Relations or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Silver AWEI Accreditation 2025 – Recognised for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion.
  • Accredited Family Friendly Workplace – Supporting work-life balance and inclusivity.
  • Hybrid working – Flexible arrangements with state-of-the-art offices designed for collaboration and wellbeing.
  • Inclusive leave options – Flexible public holidays, 20 weeks paid parental leave, gender affirmation leave, women’s health leave, and paid time off over Christmas.
  • Locations – A team of over 1,600 dedicated professionals based in modern Melbourne and Sydney CBD offices.
