Job description
The Senior AI and Modelling Engineer – Strategy works at the intersection of AI/ML and race strategy, partnering closely with strategists and engineers to identify opportunities where data-driven approaches spanning machine learning, statistical modelling, optimisation, and signal processing can improve performance outcomes. The role takes these opportunities from concept through to working solutions in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Partner with the Strategy team to identify, scope, and prioritise problems where AI/ML can improve strategic decision-making and race performance.
- Build and maintain models for key strategic inputs: pace estimation, tyre behaviour, overtaking mechanisms, and more.
- Design and develop machine learning models, optimisation algorithms, and data pipelines tailored to strategy applications.
- Develop surrogate models and data fusion approaches that enhance the speed and fidelity of strategic analysis.
- Build reliable, well-documented tooling that the wider Strategy team can operate independently for real-time and offline use.
- Support the evaluation of existing and emerging strategy optimisation methods, identifying where AI/ML may offer practical improvements.
- Stay current with relevant AI/ML developments and evaluate their applicability to strategy problems, sharing findings with the team.
- Communicate technical work clearly to strategists and race engineers, translating AI/ML outputs into accessible, actionable insight.
- Support the development of AI/ML capability within Performance Systems by sharing knowledge and good practice with colleagues.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience developing AI/ML models and optimisation algorithms, with the ability to apply these across different problem domains.
- Strong proficiency in Python and the modern ML ecosystem (e.g. PyTorch, scikit-learn, NumPy/SciPy).
- Ability to work with increasing independence — structuring problems, selecting appropriate methods, and driving end-to-end solution delivery.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex AI/ML concepts into clear, actionable language for non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment where priorities can shift rapidly.
- Experience with signal processing, computer vision, or time-series analysis.
- Degree in a relevant Engineering, Science, or Mathematics discipline, or equivalent practical experience. A Master's or PhD is advantageous but not essential.
DESIRABLE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience building high-performance Python packages backed by Rust, C, or C++.
- Experience in physics-based or engineering modelling, with a proven record of calibrating models against real-world data.
- Familiarity with real-time or latency-sensitive ML deployment.
- Experience in motorsport in a discipline that brings you close to the track.
- Experience building data pipelines or contributing to data platform infrastructure.
