The Opportunity
Orchard is looking for a Senior UX/UI Designer to join our Experience team in Sydney. This is primarily a UI-focused role, but we don’t just want someone who produces beautiful pixels. We want a designer who understands the full user journey, thinks holistically about experience, and can bring a meaningful UX lens to every brief.
You’ll be across the full lifecycle of digital design: from interpreting research and wireframes, to crafting polished, production-ready interfaces across web, email, display and social. You’ll workshop and collaborate directly with clients, work alongside strategists, UX consultants, developers, and copywriters to deliver outstanding results.
If you love crafting exceptional digital interfaces, have a genuine curiosity for user behaviour, and can present your thinking with confidence and clarity, keep reading.
Key Responsibilities
UI Design & Production
- Lead the creation of visually compelling, user-friendly interfaces for responsive and adaptive websites, apps, emails, display ads and social content.
- Develop high-fidelity designs, interaction prototypes, and modular component libraries ready for developer handoff.
- Apply and extend existing brand guidelines, design systems, and design languages creating and documenting new pages, components and assets with consistency.
- Prepare and optimise visual assets (images, GIFs, videos) for use across digital platforms including web, social, email and display advertising.
- Design to technical requirements and document design intent clearly for development teams.
UX Support & Thinking
Work with and support our Experience Design Director to:
- Lead the approach in crafting digital experiences that consider the entire user journey online and offline, not just the visual surface.
- Interpret and contribute to wireframes, user flows, and UX research findings, translating them into polished UI solutions.
- Participate in requirements gathering workshops and brainstorming sessions, contributing a design-thinking perspective.
- Apply principles of UX, empathy, and human-centred design throughout your work, championing accessibility (WCAG standards) in every deliverable.
- Ensure visual designs align with user needs, usability findings, and information architecture.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor and support junior members of the design team, sharing knowledge on tools, craft, and process.
- Take the lead in communicating design concepts, rationale, and intent to internal teams and clients with clarity and confidence.
- Lead regular client interaction, consultation, and presentation for your brands.
- Collaborate closely with the Creative Director and Associate Creative Director to ensure quality and consistency of output.
- Work with copywriters and strategists to develop promotional and content concepts that align creative with business objectives.
- Participate actively in Agile sprint planning and review processes.
What You’ll Bring
Must-Have Skills
- 5–7 years’ experience in a UI or digital design role, ideally within an agency environment.
- An excellent portfolio demonstrating depth, breadth, and creative quality across digital touchpoints.
- Expert knowledge of digital design tools including Figma, Sketch, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
- Proficiency in prototyping and interaction tools such as Framer, Principle, InVision, or After Effects.
- Demonstrated ability to ideate, conceptualise, and communicate design rationale visually and verbally.
- Solid understanding of UI and UX principles, empathy, design thinking, and human-centred design, and how to apply them through visual craft.
- Experience working with, extending, and applying brand guidelines, design systems and component libraries
- Hands-on experience setting up and managing design token systems, including Figma Variables and variable collections, with an understanding of how tokens are structured for developer handoff and multi-platform/brand use.
- Experience creating developer-ready handoff documentation and designing to technical specifications.
- Confidence in preparing and optimising visual assets (images, GIFs, video) for web, social, email, display and promotional use.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and how they apply to digital UI design.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills — comfortable presenting to clients.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced agency environment.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in UX design; user research, information architecture, wireframing, and usability testing.
- Familiarity with CMS platforms such as Optimizely, Drupal, AEM, WordPress or Umbraco.
- Motion design experience in After Effects, Premiere or similar tools.
- Experience designing digital display ad campaigns and animation.
- Experience contributing to new business pitches and presenting creative concepts to stakeholders.
