Job Purpose

The Utilities & Sustainability Manager leads a high-performing engineering team responsible for managing critical utilities systems and driving operational excellence within a cGMP manufacturing environment. This role combines strategic leadership, analytical expertise, problem-solving capabilities, and cost optimization with hands-on process improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Management & Leadership

  • Organize, develop, coach, and mentor the engineering team while conducting performance evaluations of direct reports.

  • Drive actions to achieve and maintain a 99% uptime target for critical utilities systems.

  • Ensure cGMP procedures are implemented and followed by area personnel and contractors.

  • Manage and monitor maintenance services for utilities systems through the Maintenance Work Order Program.

  • Alert senior management to critical quality, compliance, supply, and safety risks.

  • Select onboard contracted personnel, ensuring adequate staffing levels to perform functions in accordance with cGMP requirements.

  • Make strategic decisions and manage complex trade-offs on behalf of the organization.

  • Anticipate future organizational challenges and develop proactive solutions.

  • Conduct comprehensive analysis of current operational processes and workflows.

  • Identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators for operational metrics.

  • Communicate findings and recommendations to senior leadership.

  • Drive successful adoption of new processes by operations teams.

  • Ensure positive impact on client satisfaction scores.

  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Manage vendor relationships and service level agreements.

  • Oversee budget preparation and cost control for utilities operations.

Sustainability & Continuous Improvement

  • Manage the plant's Environmental and Energy Sustainability processes through continuous improvement programs.

  • Identify and implement process improvements to reduce operational costs.

  • Support the delivery cost reduction projects approx. $100,000 annually.

  • Drive and implement engineering controls to enhance system reliability and efficiency.

  • Execute actions to achieve Glidepath savings targets.

  • Document and map existing operational processes across facilities.

  • Design optimized future state processes.

  • Conduct gap analysis to identify discrepancies between current performance and desired outcomes.

  • Create optimized process flows and operational models.

  • Identify trends and patterns to inform improvement initiatives.

  • Establish baseline measurements and track improvement progress.

  • Support improvement of capital projects from inception to completion.

  • Ensure implementation of process improvements within established timelines.

  • Deliver measurable improvements in operational KPIs and efficiency metrics.

Innovation & Technology

  • Evaluate and recommend technology solutions to automate manual processes.

  • Support digital transformation initiatives aligned with operational needs.

  • Assess current technology stack and identify enhancement opportunities.

  • Provide technological training to educate teams on new systems and tools.

  • Train staff in new processes and procedures.

  • Facilitate workshops and continuous improvement sessions.

  • Leverage data analytics and monitoring systems for predictive maintenance.

  • Implement energy management systems and sustainability tracking platforms.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Prepare and present regular reports on utilities performance, sustainability metrics, and cost savings.

  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives for facility operations.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including operations, quality, EHS, and finance.

  • Support regulatory inspections and client audits.

  • Lead or participate in special projects as assigned by senior management.

  • Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and best practices.

  • Represent the organization in industry forums and sustainability initiatives.
