Job Summary

Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the treatment of respiratory disorders for inpatients and outpatients with various types of media i.e., oxygen and other therapeutic gases and mist inhalation equipment. Establishes a good rapport with fellow associates while maintaining a professional relationship. Responsible for Critical Care Ventilators, assessment and management of pulmonary conditions of patients and responding to Code Blue. Draws and analyzes arterial blood gases. May assist with Bronchoscopy duties. Patient populations served may include neonates, infants, pediatrics, teens, adults and geriatrics with the potential for neonate and/or pediatric patient only through the Emergency Room (until they are transferred hospital RT staff only). Acts as a resource for physicians and residents.

                         

Job Details

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide assessment, treatment, care and evaluation to patients with respiratory insufficiencies.  

  • Direct respiratory caregivers for delivery of care.  

  • Implement and monitor patient care plans.  

  • Assess patients for the appropriate type and frequency of treatment and develop, implement and monitor patient care plans.  

  • Monitor, record and communicate patient condition. 

  • Perform advanced respiratory care modalities, evaluate respiratory practice, administer medications/treatments and perform blood gas puncture and analysis.  

  • Educate patients and families about the illness and provide information about community support groups and other programs.  

  • Float to other hospitals.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program 

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care 

  • Ohio Respiratory Care Professional (RCP) Board Licensure 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) 

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS) Certifications through the American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experience in critical care 

  • Neonatal/pediatric experience when appropriate for site 

  • Experience performing invasive procedures preferred when appropriate for site

Physical Requirements:

  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

  • Normal hearing and vision or corrected to normal range.

  • May require sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
