The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) is an independent research institute in the field of applied economic research focussing on Central, East and South East Europe. The institute has been operating successfully for over 50 years and enjoys an excellent international reputation. We offer our clients and stakeholders economic studies, forecasts and economic data. To strengthen our team of economists, we are currently looking for an Economist specialised in the Western Balkans (30 hours per week) . Main Tasks Work on our project on economic convergence in the Western Balkans Participate in our other research projects on the Western Balkans Carry out applied macroeconomic analysis on a range of issues relevant to the region Contribute to project preparation in areas such as economic growth and development, EU integration, foreign investment and other related topics Support the dissemination of our research, engagement with policymakers and stakeholders, and bringing our findings into the public debate Requirements Master’s degree or PhD in economics or a related field Skills in applied economic analysis Experience with macroeconomic data analysis and the ability to interpret economic indicators and trends Good knowledge of macroeconomic datasets Knowledge of the Western Balkan economies Strong interest in economic policy Interest in economic growth and development Willingness to contribute to project preparation Flexibility in terms of tasks and topics Ability to learn and adapt quickly Strong ability to work as part of a team Excellent command of English Knowledge of Balkan languages is not required, but would be considered an asset Previous research experience in applied macroeconomics is desirable, but not strictly required What we offer A collaborative and inclusive workplace, with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development Flexible working times and home office opportunities A dynamic and international research environment with good working conditions Travel and public speaking opportunities in Austria, the EU, the Western Balkan countries and at scientific conferences The chance to make a meaningful impact on economic research in Europe Living and working in one of the most liveable cities in the world Closing date for applications: 19. June 2026 Start: as soon as possible Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. Potential invitations for job interviews may be issued before the application deadline. Initially, the contract will be for a fixed term of 18 months, but the appointment could be made permanent (subject to a satisfactory probationary period). Monthly remuneration (14 times per year), for a 30-hour week, will be € 2,832 gross or above, depending on qualifications and experience.
