From Oscar Kjellberg’s invention of the covered welding electrode in 1904 to today’s advanced solutions in welding automation and consumables, ESAB continues to shape the future of fabrication and manufacturing worldwide.
We are now looking for a Research Scientist – Welding Physics and Materials to join our Global R&D Filler Metals organization in Gothenburg. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated researcher who wants to work with advanced welding science, cutting-edge laboratory technologies, and long-term innovation projects in an international environment.
As part of our Research Team, you will contribute to both fundamental and applied research within welding physics, metallurgy, and process development — helping drive the next generation of welding solutions.
Your responsibilities:
As a Research Scientist, you will:
- Lead and execute metallurgical and welding process research projects from planning through analysis and reporting.
- Take overall responsibility for the Arc Characterization Laboratory (ACL), focusing on welding process characterization using advanced high-speed imaging and measurement systems.
- Drive long-term research initiatives aligned with ESAB’s technology roadmap and strategic priorities.
- Collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, laboratory technicians, and external research partners.
- Analyze and present research results in a clear and structured way to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop and improve signal processing and image analysis tools using Python and related technologies.
- Support cross-functional R&D activities and contribute to sustainable product development.
- Participate in scientific conferences, seminars, and external collaborations.
Your profile:
We believe you have:
- A PhD in Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Control & Automation, or a related field.
- Strong theoretical knowledge in:
- Welding physics
- Plasma physics
- Welding process characterization
- Filler metal interactions
- Hands-on experience with:
- Welding arc analysis
- Process monitoring
- Robotic welding systems
- Experience in scientific programming and data analysis using Python.
- Strong knowledge of metallurgy and the relationship between welding, microstructure, and mechanical properties.
- Experience managing industrial or applied research projects.
- Knowledge of experimental techniques such as hardness, tensile, impact, fatigue, and residual stress testing.
- Excellent communication skills in English. Swedish is considered an advantage.
- Experience with AI or machine learning applications in welding research is meritorious.
What we offer:
- A highly specialized and collaborative research environment.
- Opportunities to work with advanced laboratory technologies and global R&D projects.
- Close collaboration with international universities, research institutes, and industry experts.
- Professional development opportunities within a global technology leader.
A workplace driven by innovation, sustainability, and continuous learning.
