Job description

Kia ora!

At Air New Zealand, technology plays a critical role in how we deliver exceptional customer experiences, improve operational performance, and empower our people.

We are currently recruiting for both an Intermediate Software Engineer and a Senior Software Engineer within our Software Engineering Chapter to help step change the next generation of digital products and platforms at Air New Zealand. Candidates will be considered at the appropriate level based on their experience, technical capability, and demonstrated impact.

As part of our engineering evolution, we are moving at pace toward Agentic Software Engineering - where AI-assisted tooling, automation, and intelligent workflows amplify the impact of small, highly capable engineering teams.

This is a rare opportunity to work on complex and rewarding engineering challenges while contributing to a culture of innovation, continuous learning, ownership, and collaboration.

The role you will play:

As an Intermediate/Senior Software Engineer, you will bring strong backend engineering expertise while collaborating across disciplines to design, build, test, deploy, and own and operate scalable software solutions.

You will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain modern REST APIs and event-driven MICROSERVICES https://machalliance.org/
  • Build resilient, scalable, and secure cloud-native applications using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, architects, software engineers and designers to deliver high-quality customer and operational experiences.
  • Contribute to architectural and technical design decisions across distributed systems and integration platforms.
  • Contribute to engineering quality through automated testing, code reviews, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Explore and apply modern AI-assisted engineering workflows, rapid prototyping approaches, and emerging practices.
  • Mentor and support other engineers through knowledge sharing, technical guidance, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Contribute to evolving engineering standards, reusable patterns, and best practices across the Software Engineering Chapter.

Our ideal candidate:

We’re looking for engineers who are curious, adaptable, collaborative, and excited about modern software engineering practices.

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in software engineering, with strong backend development expertise.
  • Deep experience designing and building APIs and distributed microservices architectures.
  • Strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot development. While Java is our primary programming language, we also value experience in other strongly typed languages if you are motivated to learn and work with Java.
  • Experience building event-driven systems and integrations using technologies such as Apache Kafka.
  • Experience developing and deploying cloud-native applications on AWS.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including system design, reliability, security, maintainability, and performance.
  • Practical experience using AI tools to support software engineering workflows, such as coding assistants or AI-assisted development workflows. But above all, excitement to help shape the future of AI-enabled engineering at Air New Zealand.
  • Experience with automated testing practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

The following experience would be highly valued:

  • Full stack engineering experience across backend and frontend technologies.
  • Experience working in small, autonomous product teams.
  • Self-taught experience demonstrating initiative, strong problem-solving skills, and a proven portfolio of work.

Responsibilities and scope will vary depending on the level of appointment, with Senior Software Engineers expected to demonstrate deeper architectural leadership, mentoring capability, and ownership across complex distributed systems.

Why join Air New Zealand?

At Air New Zealand, you’ll have the opportunity to work on meaningful technology that impacts millions of customer journeys and operational experiences.

We offer:

  • Opportunities to work with modern cloud, integration, and AI-enabled engineering technologies as we continue evolving toward Agentic Software Engineering.
  • Discounted staff travel across Air New Zealand’s domestic and international network and more!

Applications close 23/06/2026.

We’ll be reviewing applications throughout the advertising period, so we encourage you to apply early as the role may close sooner if we find the right candidates.

At Air New Zealand, we are proudly committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and believe in creating a truly inclusive workplace where everyone can be themselves and thrive.
