Job description
AECOM is seeking a MEP Cost Manager and Estimator with deep experience leading and developing construction cost estimates across all phases of design and construction. As an MEP Cost Manager and Estimator, the candidate will play a critical role across multiple projects simultaneously, supporting teams through all phases of the project lifecycle, from early concept through construction and close-out. Projects will vary in scale, complexity, and value, requiring strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed, accurate quantity take-offs for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and low-voltage systems across all design stages, from conceptual design through construction documentation.
- Develop conceptual budgets, cost plans, and parametric models using limited design information, historical data, and market benchmarks.
- Develop estimate assemblies comprised of labor, material and equipment detail.
- Solicit, level, and analyze subcontractor and vendor pricing to ensure competitive and complete coverage.
- Perform scope gap analyses to identify omissions and ensure full system coverage.
- Evaluate and propose cost-effective alternatives for materials, equipment, and construction methodologies to support value management initiatives.
- Partner closely with architectural, civil, and structural estimating teams to identify design gaps, coordination issues, constructability concerns, and market risks.
- Utilize industry-standard tools (CostX, OST, Bluebeam, Revit/BIM models, MII, PACES) for quantity extraction, analysis, and coordination.
- Lead estimate reconciliation discussions with clients, design teams, and construction managers, clearly articulating assumptions, variances, and risks.
- Review, analyze, and validate MEP-related change orders and cost impacts during construction
- Provide expert guidance on cost, scope interpretation, and market conditions throughout project delivery.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BA/BS plus six years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience in MEP estimating, with strong expertise in at least one core discipline (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or fire protection).
- Broad understanding of all MEP systems preferred, with the ability to assess and coordinate across trades.
- Ten years of experience in Construction and or Estimating.
- Hands-on field experience or direct experience in construction trades.
- Practical understanding of construction means and methods gained through field exposure.
- Working knowledge across major construction divisions and trades, with the ability to validate estimate components prepared by others for quality control.
- Expert-level estimating knowledge in at least one discipline (e.g., civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, or specialty trades).
- Experience estimating large-scale transportation, infrastructure, or complex federal programs.
- Familiarity with multiple estimating formats and classification systems (e.g., CSI, UniFormat).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work on Federal and Military projects and meet background check and clearance requirements.
- Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
- Sponsorship for US employment authorization is not available now or in the future for this position.
- As a condition of continuing employment, will be required to obtain Security Clearance issued by the US Government
