Real Chemistry is hiring a Senior Medical Writer to join the Publications team within our medical communications group.
In this role, you'll lead the development of high-quality scientific publications across a range of therapy areas, partnering with clients, authors, and cross-functional teams to translate complex data into clear, accurate, and strategically aligned outputs. You'll play a central role in shaping publication content, mentoring junior writers, and helping evolve how we deliver scientific communication in an AI-enabled environment.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced publications writer who wants to deepen their therapy area expertise, take ownership of high-profile programs, and grow within a fast-paced, collaborative agency that's redefining medical communications.
This is a hybrid role, based in any of our US offices — New York City, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Carmel (IN), or Lambertville (NJ) — or remotely within the US, depending on team and business needs.
What you'll do
- Lead end-to-end development of scientific publications, including manuscripts, abstracts, posters, plain language summaries, and congress materials
- Translate publication plans into executable content; identify scientific storylines and recommend approaches to clients and authors
- Ensure compliance with ICMJE, GPP 2022, and journal-specific requirements; serve as a guidelines resource for the wider team
- Translate complex clinical and scientific data into clear, concise, and accurate content for expert audiences — and for lay audiences where required
- Conduct literature reviews and contribute to data interpretation that informs both content and strategy
- Maintain consistency in messaging, tone, and scientific accuracy across deliverables and across an account
- Own author and steering committee engagement, including kickoff meetings, content reviews, and consensus-building across multi-author teams
- Partner with account, strategy, and scientific leads to shape content direction; contribute to scope development and new business work as needed
- Mentor junior writers through structured review, coaching, and onboarding; act as a quality checkpoint on team deliverables
- Build and maintain therapy area expertise; act as a scientific point of contact for an assigned franchise or account
- Apply AI-enabled writing, literature review, and analytics tools thoughtfully and in line with Real Chemistry's responsible-use standards
- Deliver projects on time and to a high standard, proactively managing workload, surfacing risks early, and adapting to changing priorities without compromising quality
This position is a great fit if you
- Are passionate about scientific publications and evidence-based storytelling
- Enjoy working with complex data and shaping it into clear, strategically grounded narratives
- Take pride in scientific rigor, attention to detail, and producing work that holds up under expert scrutiny
- Want to mentor and develop more junior writers as part of your day-to-day
- Are curious about how AI is changing scientific publishing and want to help shape its responsible application
- Thrive in a collaborative, cross-functional environment with room to grow
- Our values — Best Together, Impact Obsessed, Excellence Expected, Evolve Always, and Accountability with an "I" — resonate with how you approach your work
What you should have
- Advanced degree in life sciences or a healthcare-related field (PhD, PharmD, or MD preferred; MS or MPH with relevant experience considered)
- 3+ years of experience in medical communications, with at least 2 years focused on publications (agency experience strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated experience leading development of manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and congress materials
- Working knowledge of publication guidelines (ICMJE, GPP 2022) and journal submission processes
- Experience supporting global congress submissions (e.g., ASCO, ASH, ESMO, AHA, ACR — depending on TA mix)
- Strong ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific data and published literature
- Familiarity with — and interest in shaping responsible use of — AI-assisted scientific writing workflows
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication, with the confidence to engage senior authors and clients directly

Working with Real HART: Since the pandemic, we have adapted to how our people told us they want to work. We have office locations in cities in the US, UK, and Europe with many employees and clients that serve as hubs where and when they need us. For employees who are within an hour of one of our offices, we expect attendance in the office two days per week, either at a Real Chemistry office or onsite with clients. We are also actively opening new office locations, so if one opens near you, our Real HART policy will apply. We are not looking for attendance for the sake of attendance but believe that the opportunity to coordinate in-office team meetings, 1:1 meetings with managers, taking advantage of on-site learning, and connecting with client partners is a critical to delivering on our purpose of making healthcare what it should be. Outside of these offices, we have regions, where people work remotely but come together quarterly for collaboration, culture and learning opportunities. We call this our Real Hybrid and Regional Teams (Real HART) approach. Real Chemistry believes we are best together – and our workplace strategy fosters connection and collaboration in person – but also supports flexibility for our people.
