Job description
We are seeking a hands-on Laser Technician / Electro-Optical Technician to support the development and operation of advanced optical and laser systems in an iterative R&D environment. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in laser systems who enjoy precision hardware work, troubleshooting complex systems, and contributing directly to experimental and prototype hardware programs.
You will work closely with engineers, physicists, and technical teams to assemble, integrate, align, test, and maintain laser-optical systems while helping establish strong operational and documentation practices within the lab.
This is a highly collaborative role in a regulated environment where safety, procedural discipline, and attention to detail are critical.
Responsibilities
- Assemble, align, operate, and maintain laser and electro-optical systems
- Support integration and testing of optical subsystems and hardware assemblies
- Troubleshoot optical, electrical, and mechanical issues in collaboration with engineering teams
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, and test documentation
- Perform precision optical alignment and measurement activities
- Maintain laboratory readiness, organization, and safety compliance
- Create and maintain SOPs, assembly procedures, and technical documentation
- Support experimental campaigns and milestone-driven hardware activities
- Operate safely within laser laboratory and cleanroom environments
Required Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor degree in optics, lasers, electro-optics, photonics, electronics, or related technical disciplines, and 2+ years of experience with laser systems and free space optics.
- Experience with optical system integration and precision alignment techniques
- Proficiency using optical measurement and alignment equipment such as:
- Experience using electrical diagnostic tools including multimeters and oscilloscopes
- Strong documentation discipline and attention to detail
- Ability to work safely in laboratory and cleanroom environments
- Ability to work on-site in Austin, TX
- This role will be exposed to export-controlled information and requires compliance with applicable export control laws and regulations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with high-power laser systems
- Experience supporting R&D or prototype hardware programs
- Familiarity with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, for optical component design and integration
- Laser Safety Officer (LSO) training or certification
- Experience operating in regulated or safety-critical technical environments
- Q/TS Clearance
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs.
- Ability to push and pull 200 lbs.
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to climb ladders
Schedule
- Typical working hours begin at 7:00 AM, Monday through Friday
- This role may occasionally require off-hours work, weekend runs, and overtime to support experiments and system operations
- Preference will be given to candidates based in Austin/Greater Austin area.
Work Environment
