Job description
The Technical Design Engineer role for the production workshop in event industry will be responsible for translating creative concepts into detailed, build-ready technical drawings (CAD) for events, exhibitions, and activations. You will act as the bridge between the design team and the workshop production team, ensuring that all custom fabrication is safe, compliant with health & safety regulations, and executed efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Design & Drafting: Produce detailed production drawings, 3D concepts, and construction plans using AutoCAD/SolidWorks for workshop fabrication and on-site use . Perform / review structural analysis and load calculations to ensure structural integrity of custom event structures, rigging points, and suspended elements.
- Prototyping & Testing: Design and develop prototypes for custom scenic elements, jigs, and fixtures to facilitate efficient assembly.
- Feasibility & Compliance: Ensure all designs are structurally sound, compliant with event regulations, and adhere to Health & Safety standards.
- Production Liaison: Collaborate closely with the project manager and workshop technicians to optimize workflows, solve construction challenges, and ensure quality control and manage costs.
- Material Management: Research, select, and manage materials for construction. Create Bills of Materials (BOM).
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, up-to-date engineering records, technical files, and "as- built" drawings
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in custom fabrication, scenic construction, exhibition
design, or event production.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field
or equivalent.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or Inventor) and
2D AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator/Photoshop) for conceptualizing.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (sheet metal, CNC
machining, carpentry) and material properties.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to solve complex technical problems in a fast-paced, deadline-driven
environment.
- Hands-on Attitude: A willingness to be on the shop floor, supporting the production team
and testing prototypes
Typical Working Conditions
- Environment: Must be able to work in a workshop environment, which may include loud noise, dust, and heat, with some on-site installation work.
- Hours: May require working evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet event deadlines.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle tight deadlines and to work on site, which may include lifting, standing for long periods, and working in varied conditions.
