Job description
Analog Devices (NASDAQ: ADI) designs and manufactures semiconductor products and solutions. We enable our customers to interpret the world around us by intelligently bridging the physical and digital worlds with unmatched technologies that sense, measure and connect.
ADI's Platform IP development group within the CTO office is seeking a senior-level applications/characterization engineer and lab manager to join our team. As part of this role, you will validate and characterize key strategic IPs that will be leveraged across multiple businesses/product opportunities throughout the company. A key focus area for this position will be data converters (ADCs and DACs) and their associated testing circuitry, however design efforts are likely to also cover PLLs/clocking, LDOs, precision references, power converters (buck, boost, buck/boost), smaller interface IP blocks and other mixed-signal/analog circuits.
You would be in charge of leading characterization efforts for newly designed IPs and define IP validation and characterization methodologies with requirements guidance and support from the design team. You would manage 1-2 lab engineers who would help you parallelize efforts and support parallel projects in the lab. You would also serve as the lab manager, coordinate the engineering lab facility, equipment calibration and maintenance.
Responsibilities include
- Design automated evaluation systems for characterization of Mixed Signal ICs. This includes developing methodology, test harnesses, PCBs, planning software to automate lab measurements and analysis/evaluation code.
- Work with IC design engineers to create test plans, debug IC products, and generate reports.
- Manage and work with 1-2 lab engineers who will work alongside with you to help parallelize efforts on multiple projects.
- Conduct precision bench measurements to correlate with production test, gather statistical data to support design yield boundaries and debug products in development.
- Write and update software for instrumentation control using C# and Python.
- Use wide variety of instrumentation, such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, pattern generators, high speed oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
- Develop FPGA software for high-depth digital capture.
- Analyze performance metrics and diagnose bugs using C#, Matlab, Excel, and utility scripts.
- Document new IP product performance and create performance plots for data sheets.
- Work with business-unit test and apps engineers to provide product correlation.
- Serve as an Applications Engineer for critical customer issue resolution.
The successful candidate will be a characterization engineer with a good working knowledge of Analog & Digital PCB design, ADC and DAC testing methods, digital data capture and pattern generation experience, and analog measurement techniques and instrumentation. He/she understands the use of analog & mixed signal devices and is capable of writing software to automate bench measurement setups using GPIB and USB controlled instrumentation. The candidate will need to work well with other engineers in a team, have strong verbal and written communication skills, and organizational skills to manage complex multi-project schedules and team resource management.
Qualifications/Requirements
- BSEE or MSEE, with 5+ years of analog or mixed-signal IC validation/characterization experience
- Solid understanding of analog electronics
- Basic understanding of statistics needed to validate design limits
- Attention to details and ability to learn, adapt, and develop new skills
- Ability to problem solve at the circuit/systems levels and lead characterization projects
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate as part of team
- Experience designing schematics for PCBs in Cadence and guiding layout
- Experience using measurement equipment such as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, digitizing oscilloscopes, pattern generators
- Familiarity with GPIB commands, MATLAB
- Experience applying Data Analysis in context of ADCs and DACs
- Comfortable programming in C# and Python for lab automation code
- Experience with EXCEL, Word, and PowerPoint
- Ability to generate clear, coherent, and complete characterization reports
- Good written and verbal communication skills, ability to interact well with customers
Desirable
- Experience managing and leading an analog or mixed-signal product characterization
- Characterization experience with ADCs, DACs and PLLs with challenging specifications
- Broad experience validating various analog/mixed-signal blocks
- Signal processing knowledge and experience with Matlab/Simulink
- Experience updating and developing lab automation software with revision control software
- Experience programming FPGAs and integrating with lab automation software
